Project Design Manager

Job Overview

We are looking for an experienced Senior Façade Designer / Design Manager to take overall responsibility for the design and technical coordination of façade projects from customer order through to manufacture and release.

This is a key role within our technical team, overseeing the complete design process — from gathering project information and coordinating with customers and interfacing trades, through the preparation and approval of drawings, to the management of internal and external design resources.

The role is particularly well suited to an experienced façade designer who is ready to progress into a management and project leadership capacity.

You will play a key role in ensuring that designs are technically robust, commercially viable, cost-effective and buildable, while meeting relevant UK standards, regulations and project-specific requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Take overall responsibility for the design of allocated projects, reporting directly to the Head of Technical.
• Develop robust, cost-effective and buildable façade design solutions.
• Manage the delivery of Approval, Construction Issue, Production and Installation drawings and associated technical documentation.
• Interpret architectural drawings, specifications and project information to develop compliant and buildable façade solutions.
• Review and check drawings, designs and production information to ensure accuracy and quality.
• Ensure designs comply with relevant UK Building Regulations, CWCT guidance and standards, fire and wind-loading requirements, and site-specific engineering criteria.
• Proactively manage drawing issues, RFIs, technical queries and comment-response trackers.
• Manage and coordinate both internal and outsourced designers, ensuring quality, consistency and programme requirements are achieved.
• Liaise with outsourced structural engineers to ensure designs are appropriately checked and verified, with supporting engineering calculations and reports provided where required.
• Undertake design and drawing work where appropriate, using AutoCAD, Revit and/or 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks or Inventor.
• Identify and resolve technical and design issues proactively, escalating risks where appropriate.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of design processes, standards and technical delivery.

Essential Skills & Experience

• Experience within the façade, architectural cladding or a closely related industry.
• Proven experience developing detailed, component-level designs for metal cladding systems, including aluminium, steel and rainscreen systems.
• Strong proficiency in 2D AutoCAD and working knowledge of 3D CAD, such as SolidWorks or Inventor.
• Good understanding of structural principles relevant to façade design, including: Wind loading; Bracket design; Load transfer; Thermal expansion; Façade interfaces and fixings
• Familiarity with CWCT guidance, BS EN standards, UK Building Regulations and CDM Regulations as they relate to façade design.
• Ability to interpret architectural drawings, specifications and technical information accurately.
• Experience checking drawings and technical/production information.
• Strong organisational and time-management skills, with a proactive approach to project delivery.
• Excellent attention to detail and a structured approach to problem solving.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team, with demonstrated leadership qualities.
• Good commercial awareness and an understanding of the relationship between design, cost, programme and buildability.
• Competent user of Microsoft Office and able to work with ERP systems and other IT packages.

Pay: £45,000.00-£55,000.00 per year
