What they need
Our Client is a long-established heavy engineering and fabrication business supporting industrial customers across the Central North Island.
The business works across heavy fabrication, structural steel, pressure systems, maintenance, shutdowns, installation work and general engineering projects.
We are now looking for a Project Engineer who can take ownership of projects from initial scope and pricing through to workshop delivery, site execution and completion.
The Role:
You’ll be responsible for managing a varied portfolio of engineering projects across workshop and site environments.
This is a practical project role. You’ll work closely with customers, tradespeople, supervisors and subcontractors to make sure jobs are properly scoped, resourced, costed and delivered.
Responsibilities will include:
- Scoping, estimating and pricing engineering work
- Managing projects from award through to completion
- Planning labour, materials, subcontractors and equipment
- Coordinating workshop manufacture and site activities
- Managing project budgets, costs, timelines and variations
- Working directly with customers throughout project delivery
- Supporting procurement and subcontractor negotiations
- Monitoring progress and resolving issues as they arise
- Managing project documentation, progress claims and invoicing
- Maintaining strong safety and quality standards
- Supporting wider operational planning where required
About You:
We’re open to different backgrounds for this role.
You may be a degree-qualified Mechanical or Project Engineer, or you may have come up through the trades and progressed into project management.
For someone from a trade background, we’re ideally looking for several years of hands-on project involvement. A degree-qualified engineer with strong early-career project experience could also fit well.
You will ideally have:
- Experience managing mechanical, fabrication, industrial or site-based projects
- Strong estimating, planning and project coordination skills
- Confidence dealing directly with customers and subcontractors
- Good commercial awareness around job costs, budgets and variations
- The ability to manage multiple jobs and changing priorities
- Practical understanding of workshop and site environments
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills
Experience across fabrication, pressure systems, shutdowns, maintenance or general engineering would be particularly useful.
There is also scope for someone with broader operational capability to take on additional responsibility over time.
Why This Role:
This is a genuine hands-on project role with plenty of variety, autonomy and direct involvement in how work gets delivered.
If you enjoy managing practical engineering projects and want to be part of an established Eastern Bay of Plenty engineering business, we’d like to hear from you.
