What they need
Project Engineer
We are looking for a capable and motivated Project Engineer to join Northland Metal Industries (NMI). This role is suited to someone with a sound technical background and a few years of project engineering experience who is ready to take greater ownership of day-to-day delivery. You will work closely with experienced management and technical staff, with genuine scope to develop into a Senior Project Engineer or Project Manager role as your capability grows.
About the Role
You will coordinate projects from the point they are handed over by Sales through planning, procurement, fabrication, external processing, installation and close-out.
The role involves regular communication with clients, suppliers, subcontractors and our workshop team. You will keep project information current, coordinate drawings and approvals, order materials, follow up supplier ETAs, manage variations, maintain schedules and ensure the workshop and installation teams have the information and resources they need.
You will work across a varied range of projects including structural steel, architectural handrails and balustrades, gates and fencing, canopies and custom steelwork.
This is an active project-delivery role. You will spend time in the office, workshop and on site, including site visits and measures where required.
You will work directly with the Operations Director while taking ownership of the day-to-day coordination and delivery of your projects.
We are looking for someone who identifies problems early, considers their impact, proposes practical solutions and follows matters through to completion.
What We Offer
• Birthday Leave: Paid day off on your birthday.
• Bonuses: Performance-based incentives.
• Project Variety: A wide range of commercial, structural, architectural and custom steel projects.
• Direct Involvement: Work closely with the Operations Director and the wider delivery team.
• Career Development: Opportunity to develop greater project-management responsibility as capability grows.
• Systems and Improvement: Opportunity to contribute to better systems, digital workflows and the ongoing development of NMI operations.
Essential Requirements
Around 3–4 years’ experience as a Project Engineer, Project Coordinator or similar project-delivery role.
Relevant experience within steel fabrication, structural steel, construction or a closely related industry.
A relevant engineering or technical diploma, qualification or equivalent technical background.
Ability to read and understand engineering and fabrication drawings.
Strong project coordination, planning and organisational skills, with the ability to manage several jobs at different stages.
Confident day-to-day communication with clients, suppliers, subcontractors and internal teams.
Strong computer skills, including confident use of Microsoft Excel and Word, and the ability to learn new digital systems quickly.
Sound judgement, initiative and the ability to identify problems, consider their impact and recommend practical solutions.
Full, clean New Zealand driver’s licence.
Highly Valued
Experience coordinating steel fabrication or structural steel projects.
Experience managing procurement, supplier lead times, project variations and site coordination.
Experience using project-management, scheduling, costing or production-management software.
Experience using AI tools or digital systems to improve project workflows, reporting or internal processes.
An interest in developing systems and improving the way projects are delivered.
Conditions of Employment
Shortlisted applicants may be required to complete pre-employment checks relevant to the position, including a pre-employment drug test. Safety, quality, reliability and professionalism are important requirements of the role.
Location
Our workshop is based in Kamo, Whangārei, with projects across Northland and the upper North Island. The role includes travel to project sites as required.
How to Apply
Please apply with your CV and a brief cover note outlining your project experience, technical background and experience within steel fabrication, structural steel, construction or a related industry.
