Project Engineer / Contracts Manager

We are seeking an experienced Project Engineer / Contracts Manager to take a key role in the planning, coordination and successful delivery of technically demanding civil construction projects. This is an opportunity to work closely with project managers, site teams, clients, consultants and subcontractors on projects where quality engineering and practical delivery are critical.

The role combines hands-on project engineering with contract administration, commercial management and construction coordination. Typical responsibilities include technical support, procurement, programming, quality assurance, subcontractor management, variations and cost control—consistent with the demands of bridge and structural infrastructure delivery.

The role

• Manage and coordinate project activities from pre-construction through to completion.
• Provide engineering and technical support across concrete structures, bridges and infrastructure works.
• Assist with construction methodologies, sequencing, temporary works and buildability reviews.
• Coordinate subcontractors, suppliers, materials, plant and site resources.
• Develop and maintain project programmes, budgets, forecasts and progress reports.
• Administer contracts, including notices, variations, claims, payment schedules and extensions of time.
• Monitor project costs and commercial performance against budgets.
• Manage quality assurance processes, inspections, testing, ITPs, hold points and as-built documentation.
• Work closely with site teams to ensure construction is delivered safely, efficiently and to specification.
• Support health, safety, environmental and compliance requirements.
• Maintain strong working relationships with clients, consultants, suppliers and project stakeholders.
• Identify project risks and resolve technical, contractual and delivery issues early.

About you

You will be a practical and commercially minded civil construction professional with experience in project engineering, contracts management or a similar role.

Ideally, you will have:

• A qualification in civil engineering, construction management or a related discipline.
• Proven experience delivering civil infrastructure, structural concrete, bridge or construction projects.
• Strong knowledge of construction methodology, project controls and contract administration.
• Experience managing variations, claims, programmes, procurement and project cost reporting.
• An understanding of NZS 3910 and common New Zealand civil construction contract processes.
• The ability to interpret drawings, specifications and technical documentation.
• Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills.
• A proactive, organised and solutions-focused approach.
• The ability to work effectively between the office, site and project team.
• A strong commitment to health and safety, quality and professional standards.
