Project Engineer - MEP, HVAC Position Overview We are seeking a detail-oriented Project Engineer specializing in MEP/HVAC to support design, coordination, and execution of commercial construction projects. The role focuses on mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems engineering, ensuring installations meet design intent, schedule, budget, and code requirements. The ideal candidate will work closely with General Contractors, subcontractors, and design teams to resolve technical issues, manage submittals and RFIs, and deliver quality MEP solutions from design through commissioning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support project delivery by coordinating MEP/HVAC design, installation, testing, and commissioning activities across multiple construction phases.
  • Prepare, review and manage shop drawings, submittals, technical specifications, and equipment data for mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems.
  • Collaborate with architects, structural engineers, general contractors (GC), and subcontractors to resolve design conflicts and ensure constructability.
  • Perform system calculations, equipment selections, ductwork/piping sizing, and layout reviews to verify design compliance with performance requirements and codes.
  • Manage RFIs, change orders, and technical correspondence; track and drive timely resolutions to minimize schedule impacts.
  • Review contractor work for quality and compliance; conduct site inspections and coordinate field engineering support to address issues during installation.
  • Support project scheduling, cost tracking, and procurement activities; coordinate delivery and installation of long-lead MEP/HVAC equipment.
  • Assist in commissioning, start-up, and functional performance testing, including preparing punch lists and ensuring corrective actions are completed.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation, including O&M manuals, as-built markups, and closeout packages.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, designers, and project staff as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in MEP/HVAC engineering on commercial construction projects; experience with general contractors (GC) preferred.
  • Proficiency with HVAC system design principles, hydronic and air systems, duct and piping layout, and equipment selection.
  • Familiarity with electrical and plumbing system fundamentals and ability to coordinate multidisciplinary MEP interfaces.
  • Working knowledge of building codes and standards (IBC, ASHRAE, NFPA, local codes) and experience ensuring code compliance.
  • Experience with design and drafting software such as AutoCAD, Revit (BIM), and HVAC/R load calculation tools.
  • Strong communication skills for interfacing with clients, contractors, and design teams; proven ability to manage RFIs, submittals, and change management.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contracts; strong problem-solving and organizational skills.
  • Preferred: experience with cost estimating, scheduling tools (Primavera, MS Project), and commissioning processes; LEED or other sustainability certification is a plus.
