What they need

Project Structural Engineer — Remote (Full-Time)

Cole C. Janisch Structural Engineering (CCJSE)

Location: Remote — United States
Position: Full-Time | 40+ Hours per Week
Compensation: $80,000 - $110,000 salary

We're looking for engineers who want more than just a job.

At CCJSE, we're building a structural engineering firm known for practical designs, clear drawings, excellent service, and a team that takes pride in getting things done.

We're growing, and we're looking for a Structural Project Engineer who wants to grow with us.

This position is for someone who enjoys engineering, takes ownership of their work, and wants to continuously improve. Someone who doesn't shy away from challenging projects, tight deadlines, or difficult problems. Someone who wants the opportunity to take on more responsibility, develop their technical and leadership skills, and advance within a growing company.

If you're looking for a place where you can work hard, learn quickly, make a meaningful contribution, and build a long-term career, we'd like to hear from you.

What You'll Be Responsible For

This is a hands-on engineering position. You will be expected to independently manage technical design tasks, make engineering decisions within your qualifications, and take responsibility for the quality of your work.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Independent Structural Design: Perform structural analysis, calculations, and design for residential, commercial, and industrial projects involving wood, steel, concrete, masonry, and other structural systems as appropriate to your experience.
  • Engineering Ownership: Take responsibility for assigned designs from initial engineering through completed construction documents. Identify problems, develop solutions, and move work forward without requiring constant direction.
  • Reviewing Others' Work: Review and check calculations, structural plans, details, and other engineering work prepared by engineers and drafting staff. Catch mistakes, provide constructive feedback, and help maintain our quality standards.
  • Technical Coordination: Work closely with project managers, engineers, drafters, architects, contractors, and clients to resolve questions and keep projects moving.
  • Problem Solving: Recognize potential design and constructability issues early, evaluate options, and recommend practical, cost-effective solutions.
  • Schedules and Budgets: Complete assigned work efficiently and within established deadlines and labor budgets. Communicate proactively when something threatens the schedule, budget, or quality of the project.
  • Mentorship and Improvement: Help less-experienced team members improve while continuing to develop your own technical knowledge and engineering judgment.

What We Expect

We have high standards, and we're upfront about them.

1. This is a full-time, 40+ hour per week commitment.

We expect a consistent, dependable full-time commitment of at least 40 hours per week, with additional hours when project demands reasonably require them. This is not a part-time position, side gig, or arrangement intended to be balanced alongside another full-time job.

2. You must already be capable of working independently.

This is a nonnegotiable requirement. We need engineers who have demonstrated the ability to take an assignment, understand the requirements, perform structural calculations, make sound engineering decisions, and deliver quality results without constant technical supervision.

We provide support, mentorship, and opportunities to learn, but this is not an entry-level position where someone else will be responsible for working through your designs.

3. You must already be capable of checking the work of others.

This is also a nonnegotiable requirement. You must have the technical knowledge, engineering judgment, and attention to detail necessary to independently review structural calculations, drawings, and details prepared by other engineers and drafters.

We expect you to identify mistakes, recognize coordination problems, verify code compliance, and provide clear, actionable feedback. You will be responsible for helping ensure that work leaving our office meets our quality standards.

4. You must take ownership.

We value people who follow through, communicate early, and take responsibility for outcomes. If you encounter an obstacle, we expect you to work toward a solution, ask for help when appropriate, and keep the team informed.

5. You must want to improve.

We want engineers who are genuinely interested in becoming better at their profession. You should be receptive to feedback, willing to learn new systems and methods, and motivated to take on increasingly complex work.

6. You must care about the whole project, not just your calculations.

Successful engineering means more than getting the math right. It means producing clear, coordinated, practical designs that are efficient to construct and delivered when promised.

Required Qualifications — Nonnegotiable

Candidates must meet ALL of the following requirements to be considered:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an accredited engineering program.
  • PE License
  • Proven ability to independently perform structural analysis, calculations, and design work without ongoing technical supervision.
  • Demonstrated experience reviewing and checking structural calculations, drawings, and details prepared by other engineers or drafters.
  • Ability to identify technical errors, assess code compliance, and provide clear direction for necessary corrections.
  • Working knowledge of applicable building codes, structural design standards, and construction practices.
  • Strong technical judgment, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally in a fully remote environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments, meet deadlines, and work effectively with a distributed team.
  • Proficiency with relevant structural design and analysis software.
  • Willingness and availability to consistently work at least 40 hours per week, with additional hours when reasonably necessary.

Important: We are not looking for candidates who need to be taught how to independently design structures or who have never been responsible for checking the technical work of others. While we strongly support professional development, both capabilities must already be present when you join our team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Structural Engineer (SE) license or progress toward licensure.
  • Experience designing structures using multiple materials, including wood, steel, concrete, and masonry.
  • Experience on both residential and commercial projects.
  • Familiarity with structural detailing, construction documents, and coordination with drafting teams.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers.
  • Familiarity with Revit, Bluebeam, RISA, ForteWeb, and commonly used structural analysis and design programs.

What You'll Get in Return

We're not looking for someone to fill a seat. We're looking for someone who can become an important part of our company's future.

We're actively building the next generation of technical and operational leaders at CCJSE. As we grow, we expect to promote capable engineers into positions with greater design authority, responsibility for other engineers, and leadership opportunities. We prefer to develop and promote talented people from within whenever possible. Your advancement will be driven by your demonstrated abilities, initiative, and results—not simply your years of experience.

We offer:

  • Real Career Growth: Opportunities to advance into senior engineering, technical leadership, project leadership, and management roles as your skills and performance develop.
  • Meaningful Responsibility: The opportunity to own challenging assignments, make technical decisions, and directly influence project outcomes.
  • Continuous Learning: Exposure to diverse project types, structural systems, and engineering challenges across the country.
  • A Growing Company: The chance to help shape processes, develop standards, mentor others, and contribute to the direction of an expanding firm.
  • Performance Recognition: An environment where initiative, technical excellence, dependability, and results are recognized.
  • Remote Flexibility: Work remotely while remaining an engaged, accountable member of a collaborative engineering team.

Who Will Thrive Here

You'll likely be successful here if you take pride in doing excellent work, enjoy solving difficult problems, hold yourself to high standards, and don't need someone constantly checking whether you're getting things done.

You understand that professional growth comes from taking on challenges, accepting feedback, increasing your skills, and becoming someone the team can depend on.

You want your career to go somewhere, and you're willing to put in the effort to make that happen.

If you're looking for minimal responsibility, highly flexible hours, or a position where someone else makes all the decisions, this is not the right opportunity for you.

But if you're an ambitious structural engineer who wants meaningful work, real responsibility, and an opportunity to grow alongside a company that's going places, we encourage you to apply.

How to Apply

Please submit your resume along with brief answers to the following questions:

  • Describe a structural engineering project for which you personally performed the design with minimal supervision. What were you responsible for, and what engineering decisions did you make independently? What challenges did you have to solve?
  • Describe your experience reviewing or checking structural calculations and drawings prepared by other engineers or drafters. Provide an example of a significant error or issue you identified, how the issue was communicated, and what the result was.
  • What are your long-term career goals, what are your goals for the next few years, and what are you looking for in your next employer?
  • This position requires a consistent full-time commitment of at least 40 hours per week, with additional hours when reasonably necessary. Does that align with what you're looking for?

Candidates who do not demonstrate both independent structural design experience and experience checking the work of others will not be considered.
