Description

Help build the future of large-scale solar — and get real engineering experience doing it.

About 5B

5B is an Australian technology business. Our name is a constant reminder of the 5 billion years of sunshine we have left, and it pushes us to find the simplest, most effective ways to put that resource to work.

We’re transforming large-scale solar with the 5B Maverick: a prefabricated, modular solar array, designed from first principles to be structurally efficient, aerodynamic and installed at light speed. Founded in 2013 by solar engineers Chris McGrath and Eden Tehan, we’re now delivering projects with partners across multiple markets. Learn more at 5b.co.

About the role

As our Project Engineering Intern, you’ll join the Project Engineering team and work on live utility-scale solar projects from day one. This isn’t a role spent on the sidelines: you’ll help produce real engineering deliverables, work with Procurement to get the right equipment specified and purchased, and partner with Project Managers to keep engineering on track.

You’ll learn from experienced Project Engineers and Project Managers, see the full engineering delivery cycle up close, and build the practical skills that set up a career in renewable energy engineering.

What you’ll do

Engineering deliverables

  • Help Project Engineers prepare design reports, calculation reports and AutoCAD drawings for solar projects
  • Review and quality-check technical documents for accuracy and compliance with project requirements
  • Keep engineering documents version-controlled and well organised in 5B’s document management system

Procurement support

  • Work with the Procurement team to make sure the right equipment is specified and purchased for each project
  • Help evaluate supplier offers, including technical compliance reviews against project requirements
  • Help resolve technical queries that come up during procurement

Project coordination

  • Track engineering deliverables with the Project Management team so they land on time
  • Help manage the interfaces between engineering and other project workstreams, flagging risks or delays early
  • Join project meetings, take minutes and follow through on your actions

Learning and growth

  • Shadow senior engineers and project managers to learn how projects are run, from risk and quality through to delivery
  • Take part in internal training and development as opportunities come up

About you

You’re curious, practical and keen to see how engineering works on real projects. You’ll bring:

  • Current enrolment in, or recent completion of, an Engineering degree (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Structural or a related field)
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD
  • Confidence with Microsoft Office, especially Excel
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Clear communication and a team-first attitude
  • The ability to juggle multiple tasks and prioritise well
  • A willingness to learn, ask questions and take on new challenges
  • Availability to travel to project sites and work across office and field environments when needed

Previous internships or project experience are a bonus, but not essential. An interest in solar or renewable energy will help you hit the ground running.

Why 5B

  • Real impact: work on technology that’s changing how large-scale solar farms are built
  • Real mentorship: learn alongside experienced engineers in a fast-moving, cross-functional team
  • Time to recharge: Birthday Leave, plus the option to salary sacrifice for an extra 2 weeks of Annual Leave
  • Benefits that grow with you: salary sacrifice options for technology, EV/PHEV transport and financial security
  • A culture built on our values: be safe, be bold, stay true, build bridges, keep asking why, answer to yourself and give back

How to apply

If this sounds like you, apply with your CV and a short cover letter telling us why you’d like to join 5B and what you hope to learn. We’d love to hear from you.
