What they need
Job Overview
We are looking for an experienced and proactive Project HSEQ Advisor to join our team and provide professional Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality support across a major project.
This is a project-based role, working closely with the Project Director and wider project management team, with a secondary reporting line to the Group HSEQ Director.
The successful candidate will play a key role in developing and maintaining a positive HSEQ culture, ensuring legal and company compliance, supporting operational teams, and driving continuous improvement across the project.
Although the role is primarily project-focused, the successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to wider business HSEQ initiatives, support other projects where required, and attend Head Office as necessary.
We are particularly interested in candidates with strong scaffolding and multi-disciplinary experience. Experience across complex industrial environments and large-scale projects is essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide professional HSEQ leadership, advice and support to project management, supervisors and operational teams.
- Support project teams in planning, implementing and continuously improving HSEQ strategies that promote legal compliance, operational excellence and a positive safety culture.
- Develop, implement and maintain integrated HSEQ management systems aligned with HSE requirements, ISO standards, NASC guidance and industry best practice.
- Lead the development, implementation and monitoring of project HSEQ action plans, ensuring risks and improvement opportunities are effectively managed.
- Provide proactive HSEQ advice across multiple disciplines, including scaffolding, rope access, coatings, insulation, blasting, industrial cleaning and associated construction/industrial activities.
- Conduct regular site inspections, HSEQ audits, internal audits, supplier audits and risk assessments.
- Ensure project activities are appropriately planned and controlled through effective RAMS, risk assessments, permits and other relevant HSEQ controls.
- Oversee and support the performance of Scaffold Inspectors on site, ensuring scaffold inspection programmes are completed, documented and effectively managed.
- Review scaffold-related documentation, inspection arrangements and compliance, working closely with operational teams and competent persons.
- Deliver and coordinate HSEQ training, including toolbox talks, safety briefings, stand-downs and accredited training programmes where appropriate.
- Mentor and support project personnel in HSEQ requirements and promote positive behaviours across the workforce.
- Support mental health, wellbeing and wider employee engagement initiatives across the project.
- Provide leadership and support to other HSEQ Advisors and project-based HSEQ personnel.
- Lead investigations into accidents, incidents, near misses and other significant events, ensuring effective root-cause analysis and corrective/preventive actions.
- Liaise with external regulatory and enforcement bodies, including the HSE and Environmental Health Officers, where required.
- Support project teams in identifying and resolving non-compliances and ensuring corrective actions are implemented effectively and within agreed timescales.
- Prepare and present project HSEQ performance reports, KPIs, trends and analytical information to the Project Director, senior leadership, Board and clients.
- Attend client meetings and represent the company professionally in relation to HSEQ matters.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, contractors, employees, management teams and other stakeholders to promote shared accountability for HSEQ performance.
- Maintain accurate HSEQ records, reports, inspection documentation and audit trails.
- Support the continued development of company HSEQ standards, systems and initiatives beyond the immediate project when required.
- Promote a proactive and positive HSEQ culture across all operational areas.
- Undertake other reasonable HSEQ duties and business improvement activities as required by the Project Director or Group HSEQ Director.
Must have
- Proven HSEQ experience working within large-scale construction, industrial or major project environments.
- The ability to work confidently at both strategic and operational levels.
- Mandatory scaffolding experience, with a strong understanding of scaffold operations, inspection, design, erection, alteration and dismantling.
- Mandatory multi-disciplinary experience, with exposure to activities such as scaffolding, rope access, coatings, insulation, blasting, industrial cleaning or similar high-risk industrial activities.
- Experience working on large projects with Tier 1 contractors.
- Strong knowledge of UK H&S legislation and practical application of HSEQ requirements.
- Experience conducting site inspections, audits, investigations and risk assessments.
- Experience developing and implementing corrective actions and driving improvement.
- Experience engaging with senior management, clients, contractors and operational teams.
Qualifications
Mandatory:
- NEBOSH Construction Certificate
- Member of IOSH
- CISRS Advanced Scaffold Inspection or Basic or advanced qualified.
Preferred:
- Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC) / Temporary Works Supervisor (TWS)
- Additional HSEQ or environmental qualifications
A scaffolding qualification is preferred; however, strong demonstrable experience working within scaffolding operations may be considered in lieu of the formal scaffolding qualification, depending on the candidate's overall experience and competence.
What We Are Looking For
We are looking for someone who can operate beyond a traditional site safety role.
You will need to be practical, commercially aware and confident enough to challenge when required, while also being able to work collaboratively with project teams to find effective solutions.
The successful candidate will be comfortable moving between strategic HSEQ discussions with senior management and practical engagement with supervisors and operatives at the workface.
You will also need to demonstrate the flexibility to support wider business requirements when required, rather than viewing the position solely as a project-based safety role.
