What they need

Ground Anchor Systems Limited is a New Zealand-owned specialist geotechnical construction company delivering technically challenging projects throughout the South Island of New Zealand.

We specialise in ground anchors, soil nails, micropiles, piling, shotcrete, rockfall protection and slope stabilisation. Our work ranges from major infrastructure and highway projects through to complex commercial developments and difficult-access residential geotechnical works.

We have invested heavily in specialist drilling equipment, plant and our people, which allows us to take on projects that require a high level of technical capability, planning and problem solving.

Our Nelson operation is continuing to grow, with a strong pipeline of work across the Top of the South and wider South Island. We are looking for a motivated Project Manager to join the team and grow with the business.

About the role

We're looking for a motivated Project Manager, or someone ready to take the next step into project management, to join our Nelson team.

This is a hands-on role where you'll be involved in projects from initial planning through to final delivery. You'll work closely with our site supervisors, engineers, drill crews, clients, subcontractors and suppliers to make sure projects are safe, well planned, commercially successful and delivered to a high standard.

Our projects are often technically challenging and don't always have an obvious solution. We're looking for someone who enjoys solving problems, taking ownership and working closely with the site team to keep things moving.

For the right person, there is significant opportunity to develop within the company and take on increasing responsibility as our Nelson operation continues to grow.

Key responsibilities

  • Manage the successful delivery of geotechnical and civil construction projects from commencement through to completion
  • Develop project programmes, construction methodologies and short-term planning
  • Coordinate site crews, plant, subcontractors, suppliers and materials
  • Work closely with Site Supervisors to ensure the next stage of work is planned and ready
  • Manage project budgets, costs, forecasts, claims and overall financial performance
  • Manage contracts, variations, purchase orders and project reporting
  • Maintain strong relationships with clients, engineers and other project stakeholders
  • Ensure project QA documentation, testing and records are completed accurately and on time
  • Identify project risks early and develop practical solutions
  • Support health, safety, environmental and quality requirements across our projects
  • Assist with procurement, plant movements and resource planning
  • Help maintain a positive, accountable team culture focused on safety, quality, productivity and delivery

About you

You may already be working as a Project Manager, Site Engineer, Project Engineer or in a construction role where you're ready to take on more responsibility.

Ideally, you'll have:

  • Experience within civil construction, geotechnical construction, infrastructure or a related industry
  • Strong planning and organisational skills
  • A practical understanding of how construction projects are delivered onsite
  • Good commercial awareness and an interest in project financial performance
  • The ability to communicate confidently with clients, crews, subcontractors and suppliers
  • A willingness to take ownership and make decisions
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt when site conditions change
  • A positive and practical approach to health and safety
  • Good computer and reporting skills
  • A full New Zealand driver's licence
  • NZ residency or a valid NZ work visa

Experience with ground engineering, drilling, piling, anchors or slope stabilisation would be an advantage, but it isn't essential. We are more interested in finding someone with the right attitude, construction understanding and willingness to learn.

What we offer

  • Competitive remuneration based on experience
  • Full-time, permanent position
  • Company vehicle and the tools required to do the job
  • Exposure to technically challenging and interesting projects
  • Modern specialist drilling equipment and plant
  • A growing company where good people can take on genuine responsibility
  • Ongoing training and professional development
  • Direct involvement with company management and experienced construction teams
  • Opportunities to progress as the Nelson operation and wider business continue to grow
  • A team culture built around ownership, communication, problem solving and getting the job done properly

Ground Anchor Systems isn't a large corporate where you'll be one person in a big structure. You'll be close to the work, the people making the decisions and the results of the projects you manage.

If you're an ambitious construction professional looking for greater responsibility, interesting projects and the opportunity to build your career with a growing specialist contractor, we'd like to hear from you.
