What they need
Project Manager – Substation Construction
The Opportunity
We are currently looking for an experienced Project Manager with proven substation construction experience to join a main contractor delivering major power projects across Wellington.
This is a hands-on project delivery role focused on the construction and build of electrical substations.
This role is specifically for a Project Manager with hands-on experience delivering the construction of electrical substations — not a general electrical Project Manager role.
You'll be responsible for leading the project delivery team and coordinating engineering, procurement, site construction, subcontractors and key stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered safely, on programme and within budget.
What You'll Be Doing
- Take overall responsibility for the delivery and construction of electrical substation projects
- Manage project programmes, budgets, resources, procurement and construction schedules
- Coordinate civil, structural and electrical construction activities
- Manage subcontractors, specialist contractors, suppliers and site teams
- Work closely with engineering teams to ensure designs are practical, buildable and delivered correctly on site
- Manage project scope, programme, cost, quality and risk
- Monitor project financial performance, forecasting, variations, claims and progress payments
- Manage client, consultant, network operator and contractor relationships
- Lead project meetings, progress reporting and stakeholder communication
- Ensure construction activities are completed in accordance with approved designs, specifications and project requirements
- Ensure all works comply with relevant H&S, environmental, quality and regulatory requirements
- Drive project close-out, documentation, defects and final account
The Projects
You'll be working on significant electrical infrastructure projects, with a particular focus on:
- Foundations and Civil Works
- Concrete pads (Thick, highly reinforced cast-in-situ or precast concrete pads)
- Construct a deep basement cavity or a network of underground concrete cable trenches beneath the floor level
- Precast Concrete Panel Construction
- Advanced fire separation walls
About You
We're looking for a Project Manager who has genuine, hands-on experience delivering the construction of electrical substations.
Substation construction experience is a central requirement for this position.
You'll ideally have:
- Proven experience managing the construction and delivery of electrical substations
- Strong understanding of substation construction methodologies and site activities
- Experience coordinating civil, structural and electrical works within a substation environment
- Experience managing subcontractors, suppliers and specialist electrical contractors
- Strong commercial and financial project management capability
- Proven ability to manage project programmes, budgets, resources and risks
- Knowledge of relevant NZ standards and construction contracts, ideally NZS 3910
- Relevant electrical engineering, construction or project management qualification is advantageous
What You'll Bring
This isn't a role for someone who has simply managed electrical projects from a distance.
We're looking for someone who understands how a substation is actually built — someone who can work confidently with engineers, site teams, subcontractors and clients and understands the challenges involved in delivering these type of projects.
Why This Opportunity?
Competitive salary, based on experience. A business genuinely invested in their staff. The company has built its reputation around quality delivery, strong client relationships and repeat business, creating a solid pipeline of work in the Wellington market.
The culture is a genuine point of difference. You’ll be joining a close-knit, collaborative team where people know each other, support one another and enjoy working together. There is a strong sense of ownership across the business, with the opportunity to make a real impact rather than simply becoming another number.
