Overview

We are seeking a talented and innovative Prop Maker/Joiner to bring creative visions to life through expertly crafted props for a variety of projects. Duties

• Collaborate with designers and production teams to interpret conceptual sketches and digital designs into tangible props.
• Use a wide range of materials and techniques to construct, paint, modify, and finish props according to project specifications.
• Maintain a clean and organized workspace, ensuring all tools and materials are properly stored and safety protocols are followed.
• Construct, assemble, and install props, set pieces, furniture, and bespoke wooden structures for theatre, film, television, events, and productions.
• Read and interpret technical drawings, sketches, plans, and production specifications.
• Measure, cut, shape, and assemble timber, plywood, MDF, and other materials accurately.
• Carry out joinery and carpentry work, including first-fix and second-fix construction.
• Build bespoke props and scenic pieces to meet specific design requirements and deadlines.
• Create wooden frameworks, platforms, structures, doors, furniture, boxes, displays, and decorative features.
• Use a wide range of hand tools, power tools, and woodworking machinery safely and effectively.
• Adapt and modify existing props, furniture, and set pieces as required.
• Assist with scenic construction, installation, dressing, repairs, and alterations.
• Work from scale drawings, models, design concepts, and verbal instructions.
• Problem-solve practical and technical challenges to achieve the required design and finish.
• Prepare, maintain, repair, and dismantle props and set pieces when required.
• Safely transport, load, unload, and install props and production materials.
• Manage materials and minimise waste while working efficiently to production deadlines.
• Maintain tools, machinery, workshops, and work areas in a clean and safe condition.
• Follow relevant health and safety procedures, risk assessments, and workshop regulations.
• Work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary production team in a fast-paced environment.

Skills

• Qualified or experienced joiner/carpenter with strong practical skills
• Experience in prop making, scenic construction, or set building
• Confident using hand tools, power tools, and woodworking machinery
• Able to read and work from technical drawings, plans, sketches, and designs
• Excellent measuring, cutting, shaping, and assembly skills
• Creative and practical approach to building bespoke props and structures
• Strong attention to detail and high-quality finishing skills
• Good problem-solving skills and ability to work from design concepts
• Able to work independently and as part of a creative production team
• Reliable, organised, and able to work to tight deadlines
• Good communication skills and ability to work alongside other trades
• Strong awareness of workshop and site health & safety
• Flexible and adaptable, with a willingness to take on varied projects
