Purchasing Manager

The Purchasing Manager is responsible for overseeing the company’s purchasing and procurement activities to ensure the timely, cost-effective, and quality acquisition of materials, equipment, supplies, and services. The role involves managing suppliers and vendors, negotiating contracts and pricing, monitoring purchase orders, and ensuring that procurement activities comply with company policies and project requirements.

For a construction company, the Purchasing Manager will work closely with Project Managers, Engineers, Quantity Surveyors, Warehouse, Accounting, and Operations teams to ensure that project materials and equipment are available when needed.

Key qualifications:

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Supply Chain Management, Business, Engineering, Logistics, or a related field.

• Relevant construction/procurement experience can sometimes substitute for a degree.

Construction procurement experience

• Typically 5+ years of purchasing/procurement experience, preferably in construction.

• Experience purchasing building materials, equipment, subcontracted services, and construction supplies.

• Understanding of construction drawings, specifications, BOQs/BOMs, and project schedules.

• Experience working with general contractors, subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers.

Technical skills

• Material takeoffs and cost comparison

• RFQs/RFPs and bid analysis

• Purchase orders and contracts

• Supplier qualification and evaluation

• Cost estimating and budgeting

• Negotiating prices, payment terms, warranties, and delivery schedules

• Inventory and material tracking

• Understanding of construction schedules and lead times

• ERP/procurement software and Microsoft Excel

• Familiarity with construction contracts and change orders

Management skills

• Lead and supervise purchasing/procurement staff

• Develop and maintain supplier relationships

• Coordinate with Project Managers, Estimators, Superintendents, Accounting, and Site

Teams

• Manage multiple projects and competing deadlines

• Resolve material shortages, delays, quality issues, and supplier disputes
