What they need
Staff Augmentation Contractor – Python Engineer (Code Standards Team) Team
Overview
The Code Standards team keeps language runtimes, dependencies, and development tooling supported and reliable. We help engineers build and ship safely by maintaining shared standards and carrying out upgrades across the codebase. We work with Developer Productivity, CI/CD, and Test Platform Engineering on migration tooling, shared libraries, and testing. Our current priorities include Python 3.12 migrations, Python dependency compatibility, and reducing the work required to keep services current.
Role Summary
We’re looking for two senior Python engineers to join Code Standards as contractors for an initial six-month engagement.
You’ll focus on the Python 3.12 migration: preparing package and deployable target (DT) changes, addressing review feedback, validating upgrades, and tracking them through completion. You’ll own well-scoped migration work under Code Standards oversight. You’ll work closely with those engineers when a migration needs deeper investigation or a design decision.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare Python 3.12 migration and runtime-change PRs for assigned packages and deployable targets, following the team’s migration plan.
- Resolve dependency and build compatibility issues that block upgrades. Update version constraints and replace deprecated dependencies where needed, with Code Standards review.
- Validate migrations with package-level, unit, integration, and runtime compatibility tests. Investigate failures and document the evidence needed for a safe rollout.
- Improve migration scripts, build configuration, linting, and static checks where they help make repeated migration work safer and easier to review.
- Address code review feedback, coordinate with package and service owners, and track completed work and blockers. Escalate issues that need broader platform changes.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of professional Python experience, including maintaining production services or shared libraries in a large codebase.
- Strong knowledge of Python packaging and build tooling, including dependency resolution, version constraints, virtual environments, and package compatibility.
- Experience upgrading Python runtimes and libraries, including diagnosing changes in behavior across versions and managing transitive dependencies.
- Practical experience with linting, formatting, and static analysis in CI/CD pipelines, and the ability to adapt to an existing toolchain.
- Strong testing and debugging skills across unit, integration, and runtime compatibility tests. Ability to distinguish migration regressions from unrelated failures.
- Experience replacing deprecated or unmaintained dependencies and checking that replacements preserve required behavior.
- Ability to work independently on scoped tasks, write clear PRs, respond to review feedback, and communicate progress and blockers in a distributed team.
Preferred Experience
- Experience with large-scale refactors, staged runtime rollouts, or coordinating dependency upgrades across many packages and services.
- Familiarity with native Python extensions, compiled dependencies, or compatibility issues across Linux and Apple Silicon development environments.
- Experience with shared dependency version policies, reusable migration scripts, or automation that reduces repeated upgrade work.
- Previous work on developer productivity, build and test infrastructure, or platform engineering teams.
What Success Looks Like
- After onboarding, contractors can independently prepare and validate scoped Python migration PRs, with Code Standards review.
- Assigned Python 3.12 package and deployable target milestones are completed and validated, with runtime changes checked before rollout.
- Migration blockers, review feedback, and validation results are clearly tracked. Recurring problems are documented or addressed in shared tooling.
- The migration continues to make steady progress.
Engagement Details
- Duration: Initial six months, with an effectiveness check at the end of FY27 Q2. Any extension will be reviewed against completed and validated migration milestones.
- Location: Remote. Proposed sourcing is LATAM, with working-hour overlap for collaboration with the Code Standards team.
- Collaboration: Embedded in Code Standards as two L5 contractor roles. Core engineers provide review, escalation support, and broader technical direction.
- Start Date: Planned for FY27 Q2; exact start date to be confirmed.
