What they need
About the role
The QA Engineer / Application Support role is responsible for executing manual testing and providing production support for business applications, APIs, interfaces, batch jobs, reports, and data flows. The candidate should be able to understand system behavior, prepare and execute test cases, validate data using SQL, investigate logs and errors, and coordinate with relevant teams until issues are resolved.
This is a hands-on execution and support role. The main emphasis is on manual test execution, test documentation, defect tracking, incident triage, troubleshooting, root-cause investigation support, and end-to-end follow-up. Test automation and enterprise integration platform expertise are not the primary requirements for this position.
Key expectation: The candidate must be comfortable performing manual testing and production support, writing SQL queries, creating test scenarios, reading logs, and identifying whether an issue is likely related to application code, database, infrastructure, network, or an external system.
Primary Focus: Manual Testing, API/Data Validation, Production Support, Incident Investigation
Core Responsibilities
1. Manual Test Execution
· Analyze requirements, functional specifications, user stories, or change requests to define manual test coverage.
· Prepare and execute manual test cases for applications, APIs, batch jobs, reports, interfaces, and data flows.
· Validate actual results against expected business outcomes and system requirements.
· Prepare clear test evidence, test results, and defect reports.
· Support SIT, UAT, regression testing, sanity testing, and release validation activities.
2. Test Case and Test Scenario Preparation
· Create test cases and test scenarios covering positive cases, negative cases, exception cases, and boundary conditions.
· Define preconditions, test steps, test data, expected results, and validation points clearly.
· Prepare or coordinate test data required for execution.
· Maintain test documentation so that results can be reviewed and reused in future releases.
3. API and Data Validation
· Perform API testing using tools such as Postman or similar tools.
· Validate request/response payloads, status codes, error messages, business rules, and basic data transformation results.
· Use SQL queries to validate data in databases such as Oracle, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, or equivalent.
· Investigate data issues such as missing records, incorrect values, duplicate transactions, failed updates, or mismatches between systems.
4. Production Support and Incident Handling
· Provide production support for assigned applications, interfaces, APIs, batch jobs, and related business processes.
· Monitor and respond to incidents, alerts, tickets, or issues reported by business users.
· Perform first-level and second-level investigation by checking symptoms, logs, database records, job status, API responses, and related evidence.
· Identify whether issues are likely caused by application/code behavior, database/data issue, infrastructure, network/connectivity, security/certificate, or an external system/vendor.
· Coordinate with developers, infrastructure teams, vendors, and business users until issue resolution or workaround is confirmed.
· Manage support tickets and follow up according to agreed SLA and priority.
5. Troubleshooting and Root-Cause Investigation Support
· Read and interpret application logs, error messages, job logs, API responses, and database records.
· Reproduce issues where possible and document clear steps to reproduce.
· Support root-cause analysis by collecting relevant evidence, timeline, impact, and technical findings.
· Document known issues, workaround steps, support notes, or runbook updates for recurring incidents.
6. Defect, Incident, and Documentation Management
· Log defects and incidents in the organization ticketing tool, such as Jira, ServiceNow, Jira Service Management, or equivalent.
· Document severity, priority, expected result, actual result, business impact, evidence, and reproduction steps clearly.
· Track defect and incident status with responsible teams and provide regular updates to stakeholders.
· Prepare test summary reports, defect summaries, incident summaries, and support documentation as required.
Required Qualifications
Must Have
· Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
· At least 3 years of hands-on experience in manual software testing, system testing, application support, or production support.
· Strong ability to write test cases and test scenarios with clear test steps and expected results.
· Hands-on experience executing manual testing for web applications, enterprise applications, APIs, batch jobs, reports, or data flows.
· Ability to write SQL queries for data validation and issue investigation.
· Experience testing APIs with Postman or similar tools.
· Ability to read logs and error messages to perform initial troubleshooting.
· Good analytical skills to classify issues and identify whether the root area is application/code, database, infrastructure, network, or external system.
· Experience or good understanding of production support, incident management, ticket handling, and SLA-based follow-up.
· Good communication and coordination skills with business users, developers, infrastructure teams, and vendors.
· Detail-oriented, proactive, accountable, and able to follow issues through to closure.
· Good written and spoken English for communication with local and regional stakeholders.
Good to Have
· Experience with ticketing or ITSM tools such as Jira, ServiceNow, Jira Service Management, or equivalent.
· Basic understanding of batch jobs, APIs, interfaces, data flow, and system-to-system integration concepts.
· Experience supporting SIT, UAT, regression testing, release validation, or production deployment support.
· Familiarity with monitoring or log tools such as Splunk, ELK, Grafana, Dynatrace, CloudWatch, or equivalent.
· Ability to read basic Java error messages or stack traces is an advantage.
· Basic infrastructure knowledge such as server, network, firewall, timeout, certificate, authentication, authorization, and connectivity issues is an advantage.
