Quality and Commissioning Technician

The Role

Sunbird Solar Solutions Limited is seeking an experienced Quality and Commissioning Technician to lead commissioning and site quality activities across our commercial and industrial solar PV projects in Poland and Germany.

In this role, you will be Sunbird’s technical presence on site during the execution phase, helping ensure every installation is built to specification, commissioned safely and correctly, and handed over for reliable long-term operation. This is a hands-on position for someone with strong technical knowledge of PV systems, practical commissioning experience and the confidence to work closely with subcontractors, grid operators and internal teams.

This role is offered on a fixed-term contract basis, with scope to discuss a permanent position for the right candidate.

Key Responsibilities

Commissioning

• Plan, witness and carry out commissioning of commercial and industrial PV systems in Poland and Germany, from cold commissioning on the DC side through to hot commissioning, energisation and final handover
• Perform and verify DC and AC testing in line with IEC 62446-1, including continuity, polarity, open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current, insulation resistance, earthing and I-V curve tracing
• Configure and commission inverters, power control systems, dataloggers, meters and export limitation equipment
• Set up and validate monitoring systems, confirm data accuracy and check system performance against design expectations
• Support grid operator and DSO commissioning activities, including protection settings, energisation requirements and market-specific compliance
• Prepare commissioning reports, test records and as-built documentation to support project handover

Quality Assurance

• Conduct quality inspections during construction, covering mounting systems, DC cabling, string protection, earthing, AC distribution and labelling
• Develop and maintain inspection and test plans, checklists and commissioning procedures for subcontractors to follow
• Identify, document and manage snags and non-conformances, working with subcontractors to close issues through to practical completion and site acceptance
• Share lessons learned with Engineering and Project Management teams to strengthen designs and improve Sunbird’s quality management processes

Troubleshooting and Ongoing Support

• Diagnose and resolve on-site faults involving inverters, strings, metering, communications and protection systems
• Provide remote technical support to electricians and OM contractors when site issues arise
• Support defects period activities and warranty claims with clear technical evidence and reporting

Site Scoping

• Carry out early-stage site visits to assess distribution boards, grid connection points and site layouts before detailed design begins
• Highlight buildability considerations and commissioning risks at development stage to support better project delivery

Required Attributes

• Proven experience in the execution phase of commercial and industrial solar PV projects, including construction, quality control and commissioning
• Hands-on commissioning experience on CI rooftop and/or carport PV systems, including DC and AC testing to IEC 62446-1
• Strong technical understanding of PV systems, including modules, string inverters, DC and AC design, protection, earthing, lightning protection, mounting systems, metering, power control and monitoring
• Recognised electrical qualification; for Poland, valid SEP authorisations (E and D, Group 1) or equivalent
• Working knowledge of grid connection and commissioning requirements in Poland
• Ability to read and interpret single-line diagrams, string plans and layout drawings
• Fluent Polish and good working English
• Valid driving licence and willingness to travel frequently between Poland and Germany

Advantageous Experience

• Understanding of German grid connection and commissioning requirements, including VDE-AR-N 4105 and 4110
• German language skills
• Experience with Sungrow, Huawei or SMA inverters
• Experience using Meteocontrol VCOM and Procore
• Thermographic inspection experience, including drone-based inspection
• Elektrofachkraft status or equivalent recognition for work in Germany
• Experience working on behalf of an EPC managing subcontracted installers

• Site quality issues are identified early and resolved before they affect handover or performance
• Commissioning records and handover documentation are complete, accurate and well organised
• Technical issues are solved quickly, reducing delays and supporting reliable system operation
• Feedback from site improves future designs, processes and quality standards across the business
