What they need

Quality Control Technician

Position Summary

The Quality Control Technician verifies that raw materials, work in process, and finished products meet approved specifications before use or shipment. The technician performs accurate testing, documents actual results without alteration, identifies and contains nonconforming material, and communicates issues promptly so production and quality decisions are based on reliable data.

Essential Responsibilities

Inspection and Testing

· Perform required incoming, in-process, and finished-product inspections using approved sampling plans, specifications, work instructions, and test methods.

· Conduct applicable product and process tests, including peel adhesion, coat weight, thickness, solids or moisture, viscosity, appearance, dimensions, and other tests assigned by Quality.

· Collect representative samples at required locations and intervals, including left, center, and right across the web and beginning, middle, and end of a roll when specified.

· Inspect adhesive laydown, release liner condition, winding quality, contamination, voids, lines, tunneling, wrinkles, and other visible defects.

· Verify that job instructions, product specifications, approved materials, and required quality checks are available and being followed.

Product Control and Escalation

· Immediately communicate out-of-specification, abnormal, or questionable results to the operator, supervisor, and Quality management.

· Identify, segregate, and place affected raw material, work in process, or finished product on Quality Hold in accordance with the nonconforming-material procedure.

· Immediately notify the operator, supervisor, and Quality Manager when a test result, material condition, equipment issue, or process condition may affect product quality. Place affected material on Quality Hold until the issue is evaluated.

· Maintain the Quality Hold until the Quality Manager or authorized designee documents the disposition and approves the material for release, rework, or rejection. Support disposition decisions by providing complete test results, samples, traceability information, and factual observations.

Documentation and Data Integrity

· Record results at the time of testing in the approved form or system and maintain complete traceability to the supplier lot, batch, job, jumbo, roll, machine, operator, date, and shift as applicable.

· Report actual results. Never change, omit, average, or substitute data to make a result appear within specification.

· Review records for completeness and accuracy; correct errors using the approved documentation practice so the original entry remains traceable.

· Prepare certificates, inspection records, hold documentation, nonconformance reports, and routine quality summaries as assigned.

· Maintain retain samples and quality records in an orderly manner and in accordance with retention requirements.

Laboratory and Measurement Systems

· Operate laboratory and inspection equipment according to approved methods and manufacturer instructions.

· Complete required equipment checks and identify instruments that are damaged, overdue for calibration, or producing questionable results.

· Do not use equipment that is out of calibration or otherwise unsuitable; label or remove it from service and notify Quality management.

· Maintain a clean, organized laboratory and protect samples, standards, and test surfaces from contamination or damage.

Quality System Support

· Assist with investigations, root cause and corrective action activities, customer complaints, internal defects, trials, and process validations by collecting accurate data and samples.

· Participate in layered process audits, product audits, inventory checks, and verification of corrective actions as assigned.

· Communicate recurring defects, unfavorable trends, and testing delays to Quality and Operations leadership.

· Follow all safety, PPE, chemical-handling, housekeeping, and environmental requirements and report unsafe conditions immediately.

· Perform other quality-related duties consistent with the role, training, and business needs.

Decision Authority

· Place material or product on Quality Hold when identification, test results, condition, or traceability is unacceptable or uncertain.

· Request that a process pause while an abnormal condition or test result is verified.

· Reject an invalid test and repeat it according to the approved method, documenting the reason for the repeat.

· Escalate unresolved quality or data-integrity concerns directly to Quality management and the Director of Manufacturing.

Performance Expectations

Testing

  • Complete required inspections and tests accurately and within the production or shipment timeline.

Data integrity

  • Enter complete, legible, traceable results that match the observations and instrument readings.

Containment

  • Identify and control suspect product promptly so it is not unintentionally processed or shipped.
  • Communication
  • Escalate failures, unusual trends, missing information, and delays immediately to the appropriate people.

Equipment

  • Use approved methods and equipment; complete verification checks and report calibration concerns.

Housekeeping and safety

  • Maintain an orderly work area and consistently follow safety, PPE, and chemical-handling requirements.

Required Qualifications

· High school diploma or GED.

· At least one year of experience in manufacturing, quality inspection, laboratory testing, or a comparable technical role; relevant education may substitute for experience.

· Ability to follow written test methods, specifications, sampling instructions, and safety procedures.

· Basic math skills, including decimals, percentages, averages, and unit conversions.

· Ability to enter data accurately and use standard computer applications such as Microsoft Excel, Word, and email.

· Clear written and verbal communication skills, sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently.

Preferred Qualifications

· Associate degree, technical certificate, or coursework in quality, chemistry, materials, manufacturing, or a related field.

· Experience with pressure-sensitive adhesives, coated films, paper, fabric, web converting, slitting, or flexible materials.

· Experience using peel testers, analytical balances, thickness gauges, moisture analyzers, viscometers, ovens, or similar laboratory equipment.

· Working knowledge of nonconforming-material control, calibration, root cause analysis, corrective action, and ISO 9001 principles.

Physical and Work Requirements

· Work in both laboratory and manufacturing environments with exposure to operating machinery, noise, adhesives, chemicals, and normal production conditions.

· Wear required personal protective equipment and follow all site safety rules.

· Frequently stand, walk, reach, handle samples, and perform repetitive testing; occasionally sit, climb stairs, bend, or kneel.

· Lift and carry samples, tools, or materials weighing up to 30 pounds, with assistance or lifting equipment used for heavier items.

· Distinguish product appearance and read instruments, labels, specifications, and computer screens, with or without reasonable accommodation.

· Work assigned shifts and reasonable overtime as business needs require.

Working Relationships

  • The Quality Control Technician works closely with Production, Slitting, Warehouse, Maintenance, Planning, Customer Service, and Quality personnel. The technician must remain objective, communicate facts promptly, and apply specifications consistently regardless of production or shipment pressure.
