What they need

The Quality Control Technician performs the daily sampling, testing and inspection that prove each dry cast and wet cast precast drainage structure meets DMS-7305, the TxDOT Items and the shop drawings. The technician records every result accurately and stops or flags product that does not conform.

ResponsibilitiesAll products

  1. Sample and test aggregates: moisture content daily and when weather changes; gradation at the frequency in the QC manual.

  2. Check batch tickets against the approved mix design; report deviations to the QC Supervisor and batch operator.

  3. Inspect reinforcing cages and steel before casting: bar/wire size, spacing, laps, welds, cover and cage position.

  4. Make, cure, transport and break concrete test specimens (cylinders or cores) per ASTM C31/C39 or the applicable Tex method; record release and 28-day strengths.

  5. Perform post-pour inspection: dimensions, wall thickness, joints, openings, lifting inserts and surface defects.

  6. Tag product as accepted, held or rejected; document repairs and re-inspect after repair.

  7. Apply the TxDOT "TX" designation and plant marks only to accepted units; verify yard storage and loading practices.

  8. Keep test logs, inspection reports and calibration checklists complete, legible and current.

  9. Keep laboratory and field test equipment clean, calibrated and in working order.

  10. Escort TxDOT and auditor personnel and support audits as directed.

  11. Follow plant safety rules and PPE requirements at all times.

Dry cast products (machine-made pipe and box culverts)

  • Monitor mixer moisture readings and aggregate moisture to keep zero-slump concrete consistent.
  • Run absorption tests and take cores from pipe and box per ASTM C497 at the required frequency.
  • Assist with or perform three-edge bearing tests on pipe (ASTM C497 / C76) and record crack and ultimate loads.
  • Check bell and spigot dimensions, roundness, gasket grooves and laying length.
  • Monitor kiln or steam curing temperatures and times.

Wet cast products (formed box culverts, manholes, inlets, junction boxes)

  • Inspect forms for cleanliness, release agent, dimensions, blockouts and embed placement before each pour.
  • Test fresh concrete: slump (ASTM C143) or slump flow / VSI for SCC (ASTM C1611), air content (ASTM C231), temperature (ASTM C1064) and unit weight.
  • Observe placement and consolidation; watch for cold joints and hot/cold weather limits.
  • Verify curing method and strength before stripping, handling and shipping.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED; technical courses in concrete or construction are a plus.
  • 1+ year in precast, ready-mix or materials testing preferred; will train the right candidate.
  • Able to use a tape measure and calipers and read basic shop drawings; basic math and computer skills.
  • Detail oriented with honest, accurate recordkeeping; bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

Required Certifications

  • ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I (required for anyone performing fresh concrete tests).
  • ACI Concrete Strength Testing Technician (required for anyone testing cylinders or cores).
  • PCI Level I Quality Control Technician, NPCA Production & Quality School Level I, or ACPA Quality School (required for technicians performing QC inspection functions; new hires may obtain it within the probation period if the plant’s DMS-7305 plan allows).
  • Preferred: ACI Aggregate Testing Technician – Level 1.
