What they need
Quantity Surveyor
Millard Studio – Bristol
Millard Studio is a growing design and build company based in Bristol, delivering high-quality residential projects across Bristol and the surrounding areas.
We are looking for an experienced Quantity Surveyor to join our construction team and take responsibility for the commercial management of our projects.
This is an important role within the business, working closely with our Director, Architectural Designer, Project Manager, site teams and subcontractors to ensure our projects are accurately costed, effectively procured, well programmed and commercially controlled from tender through to completion.
We are a close-knit team, and this role will suit someone who enjoys working collaboratively, communicating directly with the wider team and taking genuine ownership of their work. You will play an integral part in the continued growth and development of the construction side of Millard Studio.
The Role
As Quantity Surveyor, you will take ownership of the commercial side of our projects, ensuring costs are controlled and projects are delivered in line with agreed budgets and programmes.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Preparing detailed project cost plans, budgets and estimates
- Reviewing project drawings and specifications to establish accurate costs
- Preparing and managing build programmes alongside the project and site teams
- Full commercial management of projects from pre-construction through to final account
- Procurement of subcontractors and suppliers
- Obtaining, reviewing and negotiating subcontractor quotations
- Measuring and valuing works
- Monitoring project costs against budgets
- Preparing regular cost reports and forecasts
- Managing client variations and additional works
- Reviewing, assessing and agreeing subcontractor variations
- Identifying commercial risks, cost pressures and opportunities at an early stage
- Monitoring subcontractor performance and expenditure
- Managing valuations, applications and payments
- Maintaining accurate project cost information throughout the build
- Supporting the project team with commercial and procurement decisions
- Managing final accounts and project close-out
About You
We are looking for someone with strong construction knowledge who can confidently take ownership of the commercial side of multiple projects.
You will ideally have experience working within residential construction or design and build, with a good understanding of extensions, renovations, loft conversions, refurbishments and/or new-build projects.
We are looking for someone who is:
- Commercially minded and confident with numbers
- Highly organised and methodical
- Experienced in cost planning and cost control
- Confident negotiating with subcontractors and suppliers
- Comfortable managing variations and final accounts
- Able to read and understand architectural and technical drawings
- Proactive in identifying potential cost and programme issues
- Confident communicating with clients, subcontractors and internal teams
- Able to work independently and manage multiple projects
- Practical and construction-minded, with an understanding of how decisions made during pre-construction affect the build
