What they need

Great Land Construction is an award-winning Auckland-based residential main contractor specialising in standalone homes, duplexes, townhouses, terrace housing and multi-unit residential developments. Our projects received two Silver Awards in 2026 and a Bronze Award in 2025 at the Master Builders House of the Year competition.

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Graduate / Junior Quantity Surveyor to join our team. This role offers practical experience across estimating, tendering, procurement and construction cost management, with guidance from experienced team members.

Our team includes many professionals originally from Hong Kong, and Cantonese is commonly spoken within the team. Cantonese and/or Mandarin language skills would be an advantage when communicating with team members, clients and subcontractors. We welcome applications from candidates of all backgrounds.

We welcome applications from recent graduates and candidates with relevant internship or junior quantity surveying experience.

About the Role

Based at our North Shore office, you will support the commercial and project teams in preparing estimates, monitoring project costs, administering payments and managing variations. You will work closely with site teams, clients, consultants, subcontractors and suppliers across our Auckland residential projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with quantity take-offs, cost estimates, project budgets and tender submissions.
  • Obtain supplier and subcontractor quotations, compare pricing and clarify scope.
  • Assist with preparing contracts, subcontract agreements and purchase orders.
  • Monitor project expenditure against budgets and assist with cash flow forecasts.
  • Prepare draft client progress payment claims for review.
  • Check subcontractor payment claims against completed work and agreed terms.
  • Maintain variation registers and assist with preparing and submitting variation quotations and claims.
  • Coordinate with project teams, consultants, subcontractors and suppliers to obtain information and resolve queries.
  • Maintain accurate records of costs, commitments, payments and variations.
  • Assist with project cost reports, identifying discrepancies and raising potential risks.
  • Assist with final account reconciliation and project close-out.

What We Are Looking For

  • A degree or diploma in Quantity Surveying, or a relevant construction qualification.
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • Attention to detail and an organised approach to record keeping.
  • Good written and spoken English.
  • The ability to read and interpret construction drawings, or a sound foundation and willingness to develop this skill.
  • A willingness to learn, ask questions and take responsibility for assigned tasks.
  • The ability to work collaboratively and manage competing deadlines.

What Would Be an Advantage

  • Internship, placement or previous experience in quantity surveying, estimating or construction.
  • Exposure to residential construction projects.
  • Familiarity with quantity take-off or estimating software.
  • Cantonese and/or Mandarin language skills to support communication with clients, subcontractors and team members.

Previous full-time QS experience and professional membership are not required.

What We Offer

  • Practical experience across the full residential construction process.
  • Guidance and support from experienced team members.
  • Exposure to a variety of Auckland residential projects.
  • Opportunities to develop your estimating, procurement and commercial management skills.
  • A collaborative, multilingual working environment.

Work visa support may be available for the successful candidate, subject to applicable Immigration New Zealand requirements, employer accreditation and the candidate’s eligibility.
