What they need

We are supporting a deep-tech quantum computing company in the search for an experienced researcher or quantum technologist to join its advanced architecture R&D team.

The role is particularly suited to researchers who can connect fundamental quantum theory with experimental hardware and want to influence the architecture of a complete quantum computing system.

As a Quantum system architect you will contribute to the architecture of future quantum computers from conceptual system design and performance evaluation through to experimental validation using currently available technologies.

You will work closely with experimental physicists, theoretical researchers and engineers to evaluate new architectures, identify technical bottlenecks and develop experimental approaches for future quantum computing platforms.

Primary Responsibilities:

Successful hire will be responsible for:

  • Conduct research into quantum computing system architectures
  • Design and evaluate quantum circuits, experimental systems and control architectures
  • Investigate and experimentally validate new architecture concepts
  • Translate theoretical requirements into practical experimental specifications
  • Design and conduct advanced quantum physics experiments
  • Collaborate with theoretical researchers on system requirements and specifications
  • Evaluate technical feasibility and scalability of proposed architectures
  • Conduct system-level performance evaluation and bottleneck analysis
  • Support technical reviews across research and development projects
  • Develop experimental methods for quantum-state generation, manipulation and measurement
  • Participate in system and architecture design reviews
  • Analyze experimental results and recommend system improvements
  • Document experimental designs, technical decisions and research findings
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary and international research teams

Desired Qualifications:

Candidates should hold a PhD in a relevant technical discipline.

Suitable backgrounds include:

  • Experimental Physics | Quantum Physics | Quantum Information Science | Quantum Optics | Applied Physics | Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics | Laser Physics | Advanced Optics | Nonlinear Optics | Quantum Engineering | Electrical or Electronic Engineering with relevant quantum research experience.
  • Candidates should have at least two years of relevant research or R&D experience. Research undertaken during Master's or doctoral studies may be considered.

Experimental Skills:

Candidates should have substantial hands-on experimental research experience and be capable of independently designing, building, operating or improving sophisticated physics experiments.

Relevant experience may include:

  • Laser-based experimental systems
  • Continuous-wave and/or pulsed laser systems
  • Optical alignment and stabilization
  • Interferometry
  • Phase stabilization and locking
  • Quantum-state measurement
  • Experimental control and instrumentation
  • Advanced laboratory instrumentation

Experience designing an experimental system from concept through implementation and validation would be particularly valuable. Additional advantages include:

  • Experience with quantum computing system architecture
  • Experience translating theoretical concepts into experimental hardware
  • Experience developing complex quantum experimental platforms
  • Experience working across physics, hardware and control systems
  • Previous experience in a quantum technology or deep-tech company

Ideal Candidate Profile

This opportunity would particularly suit someone who:

  • Understands quantum hardware from fundamental physical principles
  • Can connect theory, experimentation and system-level design
  • Enjoys solving complex, open-ended scientific problems
  • Has deep expertise in one technical area while being willing to work across adjacent fields
  • Can independently design and conduct sophisticated experiments
  • Is comfortable challenging existing technical assumptions
  • Enjoys collaborating with physicists, engineers and theoretical researchers
  • Wants to see fundamental research translated into practical technology
  • Is interested in contributing to the development of a real-world quantum computing system
  • Thrives in a fast-moving research and deep-tech environment
