What they need

ESI Motion is seeking a talented and motivated individual for the role of Radiation Effects Engineer to support radiation effects evaluation, testing, and qualification of electrical and electronic components used in space products. This individual will work under the guidance of the Engineering leadership team and collaborate closely with Electrical, Systems, Test, Software, Quality, and Program personnel.

This role is intended for a hands-on engineer with a strong understanding of semiconductor devices, electronic circuits, and radiation effects. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, technically curious, and capable of owning radiation-related activities from requirements definition and component assessment through test execution, data analysis, reporting, and design recommendation.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Lead radiation effects and radiation hardness assurance activities for space electronic components, circuit cards, and assemblies.
  • Develop and maintain radiation requirements, compliance approaches, verification plans, and component-level qualification strategies based on mission environments and design life.
  • Plan, coordinate, and support Total Ionizing Dose (TID), Single Event Effects (SEE), Single Event Latchup (SEL), Single Event Upset (SEU), Single Event Burnout (SEB), and Displacement Damage Dose (DDD) testing.
  • Develop radiation test plans, procedures, test reports, and Radiation Lot Acceptance Test (RLAT) documentation, as applicable.
  • Design and oversee radiation test setups, interface electronics, fixtures, cabling, instrumentation, bias conditions, monitoring, and automated data collection.
  • Coordinate test campaigns with external radiation facilities, component manufacturers, customers, and subcontractors, including test readiness and logistics.
  • Evaluate published radiation data and component test results to determine suitability for intended applications and compliance with program requirements.
  • Perform radiation susceptibility assessments for analog, digital, mixed-signal, power, memory, processor, sensor, and optoelectronic devices.
  • Analyze test anomalies and radiation-induced failures; support root-cause investigations and recommend component, circuit, software, shielding, or system-level mitigations.
  • Support EEE parts selection, approval, procurement specifications, screening, lot traceability, derating, and obsolescence decisions.
  • Maintain radiation test data, component qualification records, lessons learned, and an internal radiation effects database.
  • Provide radiation engineering inputs to proposals, customer reviews, design reviews, PDRs, CDRs, test readiness reviews, and qualification reviews.
  • Collaborate with design teams to improve radiation tolerance, product reliability, testability, and fault response.
  • Support technical planning, cost and schedule estimates, risk assessments, and cross-functional program execution.

Desired Experience:

  • Planning and executing radiation testing of EEE components, circuit cards, or electronic assemblies for space applications.
  • Applying TID, SEE, SEL, SEU, SEB, DDD, ELDRS, annealing, and dose-rate concepts to electronic component qualification.
  • Developing radiation test hardware and automated test systems using laboratory instrumentation and data acquisition equipment.
  • Analyzing analog, digital, mixed-signal, microprocessor, memory, power semiconductor, sensor, and optoelectronic circuits.
  • Using Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, or similar tools for test automation, data reduction, statistical analysis, and report generation.
  • Working with radiation environment or device-effects tools such as SPENVIS, OMERE, CREME96, FASTRAD, NOVICE, or similar platforms.
  • Interpreting radiation requirements and industry test methods, including MIL-STD-883 Method 1019 and applicable NASA, JEDEC, ESCC, or customer requirements.
  • Supporting Radiation Hardness Assurance plans, EEE parts control processes, RLAT, component qualification, and mission assurance activities.
  • Working with external proton, heavy-ion, gamma, electron, or neutron test facilities and supporting on-site test campaigns.
  • Producing clear test plans, procedures, technical analyses, compliance assessments, and customer-ready reports.
  • Working within aerospace, defense, space, or other high-reliability and regulated engineering environments.
  • Familiarity with configuration management, ECOs, requirements traceability, document control, and change management processes.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, technical writing, and cross-functional communication skills.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical discipline; advanced degree is desirable.
  • 3+ years of relevant experience in radiation effects, electronic component testing, EEE parts engineering, semiconductor reliability, or space electronics development.
  • Hands-on experience with electronic test equipment, circuit debugging, test fixture development, and data analysis.
  • Ability to travel to external radiation test facilities and customer or supplier locations, as required.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft products including Windows 11, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills.
  • U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident status.

Our benefits package includes:

  • Medical, Dental and Vision Insurance
  • 401K Match
  • 9/80 Work Schedule
