R&D Compounding Manager

About the role

PT Sumatera Kartindo is seeking an experienced R&D Compounding Manager to join our Manufacturing, Transport & Logistics division, specifically within Quality Assurance & Control. This is a full-time position based in Medan, Sumatera Utara. In this strategic role, you will oversee the research and development of compounding processes, ensuring the highest standards of quality and innovation. You will be responsible for leading the compounding team to develop new formulations, optimise existing processes, and maintain rigorous quality control standards that align with international best practices. This position is crucial to our organisation's growth and competitive advantage in the market.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and manage the research and development of compounding formulations and processes, ensuring compliance with quality standards and regulatory requirements
• Oversee the design, testing, and validation of new compounding recipes and methodologies to meet production and commercial objectives
• Supervise and mentor the R&D compounding team, providing technical guidance, training, and performance management
• Conduct feasibility studies and cost-benefit analyses for new compounding projects and process improvements
• Collaborate with production, quality assurance, and supply chain teams to ensure seamless implementation of new formulations at scale
• Establish and maintain comprehensive documentation, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and technical specifications for all compounding operations
• Perform troubleshooting and root cause analysis for compounding-related issues, implementing corrective and preventative actions
• Monitor and analyse quality metrics, batch records, and performance data to identify opportunities for optimisation and continuous improvement
• Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations throughout all R&D activities
• Prepare technical reports, proposals, and presentations for senior management and stakeholders

What we're looking for

• Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related discipline
• Minimum 7-10 years of professional experience in R&D, compounding, or formulation development within the manufacturing or chemical industry
• Proven experience managing and leading technical teams in an R&D or production environment
• Strong knowledge of compounding processes, materials science, and quality control methodologies
• Demonstrated expertise in formulation development, process optimisation, and scaling-up procedures
• Proficiency in laboratory testing equipment and analytical techniques relevant to compounding operations
• Excellent understanding of regulatory requirements and compliance standards applicable to manufacturing and quality assurance
• Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and meet deadlines
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Indonesian
• Problem-solving mindset with strong analytical and critical thinking abilities
• Experience with quality management systems (ISO 9001, ISO 14001, or similar certifications) is highly desirable
• Familiarity with statistical analysis, Six Sigma, or lean manufacturing principles is advantageous
