R&D Engineer

About the role

Join the dynamic R&D team at Sunbond Optix Ltd as an R&D Engineer. In this full-time position based in Kwun Tong District, you will play a key role in the research, design, and development of specialized optical testing instruments and equipment for the eyewear industry. You will combine machine design, hardware engineering, and optical fundamentals to build robust, precise measurement devices.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and contribute to the machine design and physical layout of optical measurement tools and testing devices
• Design mechanical structures, select components (motors, optics, sensors, actuators), and build physical prototypes for automated inspection systems
• Collaborate on light path architecture, optical sensor integration, and precise physical alignment of lenses and light sources
• Assemble, debug, and validate hardware prototypes, identifying mechanical tolerances and structural improvements
• Continuously upgrade instrument structures to enhance measurement accuracy, durability, and manufacturing efficiency
• Partner with optical specialists and firmware/software developers to transform early-stage R&D concepts into production-ready equipment

About you

• Bachelor's Degree or above in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation, Applied Physics, Optics, or related engineering disciplines

• 1 to 2 years of hands-on experience in machine design, hardware prototyping, or optical device packaging

• Proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, Inventor, AutoCAD, or similar)

• Solid understanding of mechanical design principles, tolerance analysis, material selection, and structural stability

• Familiarity with incorporating motors, linear motion stages, and optical components into machine layouts

• Strong mechanical troubleshooting ability; practical hands-on mindset; good communication skills in English and Chinese

• Knowledge of optics fundamentals (e.g., lens geometry, optical setups, alignment techniques, or photometric testing) is highly desirable

• Basic familiarity with programming (Python/C++) or image processing (e.g., OpenCV) is a plus but NOT required

• Bonus Qualifications (Not Essential):

  • Hands-on experience with 3D printers, 3D printer firmware, or rapid prototyping tools.
  • Knowledge of basic microcontrollers or sensor interfacing for test bench setups.
  • Understanding of eyewear optical standards or lens manufacturing processes.

• Key Soft Skills: Strong mechanical troubleshooting ability; practical hands-on mindset; good communication skills in English and Chinese.
