R&D Manager

We're a fast-growing, multi-channel e-commerce business, and we're looking for an R&D Manager to take full ownership of how we find, develop, and validate new product ideas.

You'll be responsible for identifying real product opportunities, researching what customers actually want, and turning those insights into product concepts that are creative, competitive, and manufacturable. Working directly with leadership and suppliers, you'll own the full product development process from idea to sampling-ready concept — using your own judgment to decide what's genuinely worth pursuing.

What You'll Own

• Opportunity identification. Identify potential product opportunities using a structured and repeatable process, evaluating ideas against predefined criteria and using your judgment to decide which are genuinely worth developing further.
• Market research. Research the market to understand what customers actually want — analyzing customer reviews, studying competing products, researching relevant keywords, and identifying common complaints and missing features. The goal is practical insight, not long reports.
• Concept development. Develop actual product concepts and explore ways to make them more fun, appealing, useful, intuitive, and competitive — including function, features, shape, design, colors, themes, materials, size, construction, accessories, and variations.
• AI-assisted ideation. Use AI tools to explore ideas, develop different product directions, create mockups, and visualize concepts, experimenting with multiple creative approaches before deciding which direction is strongest.
• Supplier engagement. Find and communicate with suppliers to understand what can realistically be manufactured — including customization possibilities, materials, production options, limitations, and pricing — and use their feedback to refine concepts.
• Iteration. Continuously iterate on ideas rather than stopping at the first acceptable concept, exploring multiple directions, rejecting weaker ideas, and refining until you reach a concept you genuinely believe is strong. Several strong final versions may be prepared and tested through customer surveys.
• Sampling readiness. Once a product direction is approved, prepare it for sampling — finalizing the concept, confirming specifications and manufacturing feasibility with the supplier, and confirming pricing.
• Ownership & judgment. Challenge assumptions, ask questions, and take ownership of the product development process — using your own product judgment to determine which direction the company should pursue, rather than simply presenting options.

About You

We're looking for someone with strong creative and product instincts who can turn market insight into product concepts that are both desirable and manufacturable, and who's comfortable owning that decision end to end.

You'll also bring:

• Creative thinking. Strong creative thinking and the ability to come up with original product ideas and meaningful improvements to existing toys.
• Product sense. A good understanding of what makes a product appealing, intuitive, and desirable.
• Visual judgment. Strong visual sense and good judgment around colors, shapes, proportions, themes, and overall product appearance.
• Market analysis. Ability to analyze customer reviews, competing products, and market information and turn those insights into practical product decisions.
• AI tool experience. Experience using ChatGPT, AI tools, or other creative tools to explore ideas and create product mockups or visual concepts.
• Supplier communication. Ability to communicate with suppliers and understand basic manufacturing, materials, customization, pricing, and production limitations.
• Ownership & judgment. Strong judgment and ownership — comfortable rejecting weak ideas and deciding which concepts are genuinely worth pursuing.
• Iterative mindset. Willingness to iterate, experiment, and refine ideas until you reach a strong final product.
• Relevant experience. Experience with Amazon, product development, private label, FBA, supplier communication, or physical product development is a must.
