About Hope for Youth and Families

Hope for Youth and Families is a nonprofit organization committed to supporting young people and families through educational, enrichment, and community-based programming. We partner with schools and other community organizations to provide students with the support, skills, and opportunities they need to succeed.

Hope for Youth and Families is seeking an enthusiastic Reading Intervention Intern to support 7th-grade literacy development at a partner school within the Springfield Empowerment Zone in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Position Overview

The Reading Intervention Intern will work closely with lead teachers, Humanities educators, and school staff to provide targeted reading support to 7th-grade students. During morning school hours (7:45 AM to 12:30/1:00 PM), this position will use both small-group interventions and push-in support directly within ELA and Humanities classrooms. This internship offers valuable hands-on experience in adolescent literacy instruction, small-group intervention, and data-informed support within an innovative urban school setting.

This position is ideal for college students, graduate candidates, or aspiring educators passionate about helping middle school students strengthen foundational and analytical reading skills, build academic confidence, and achieve grade-level literacy growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Push-In & Small-Group Support: Provide dynamic push-in literacy support in 7th-grade ELA and Humanities classrooms, working alongside lead teachers to support students during core instruction and pulling small groups for targeted intervention.
  • Assessment & Data Tracking: Support the administration of reading assessments and help monitor 7th-grade student progress to inform instructional adjustments.
  • Instructional Collaboration: Work collaboratively with 7th-grade English Language Arts (ELA)/Humanities teachers and school staff to align reading intervention strategies with core classroom instruction.
  • Evidence-Based Practice: Apply and deepen knowledge of Science of Reading principles and evidence-based adolescent literacy interventions under direct mentorship.
  • Classroom & Culture Support: Help foster a positive, structured, and encouraging learning environment that motivates middle school students.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing or holds a degree in Education, English, Middle/Secondary Humanities, Literacy, or a related field.
  • Passion for working with middle school youth (7th grade) in an urban public school setting.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Interest in learning and applying structured literacy methodologies and Science of Reading practices.
  • Dependable, punctual, and able to work Monday through Friday from 7:45 AM to 12:30/1:00 PM when school is in session.
