What they need

Introduction:

Tūhoe is an iwi with a clear vision for the future of wellness, and Te Uru Taumatua has a strategy in place to bring that vision to life.

Our vision recognises that lasting wellness is built within whānau, hapū and communities. We are working towards a future where hapū are equipped, empowered and supported to play a leading role in the prevention and management of chronic health conditions. As this capability grows, many of the challenges that currently present at our medical centres will increasingly be addressed within whānau and hapū settings.

Within this wider approach, our medical centres are an important part of the overall system of care. Their role is to provide high quality clinical services and expertise when medical intervention is required, particularly for acute illness, injury and complex health needs.

This represents a significant shift from traditional healthcare models, where health services are often expected to carry responsibility for all aspects of wellness. Instead, Tūhoe's vision places wellness within the hands of whānau and hapū, with health services contributing their specialist clinical expertise as one component of a broader, community-led approach.

For nurses, this provides the opportunity to focus on delivering excellent clinical care as part of a system where responsibility for wellbeing is shared more broadly across whānau, hapū and community networks.
