Registered Nurse

Job Summary

The Wausau School District is seeking a Registered Nurse to manage health related barriers to learning, and promote health and safety for our students. The school nurse promotes the physical, mental, emotional and social well-being of students to enhance student learning and success.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
● Must have the knowledge and ability to apply nursing standards and skills while working within the school setting
● Must use ethical and evidence-based practice
● Must be self-directed and be able to work independently
● Must possess strong, collaborative interpersonal skills
● Must be able to instruct, delegate to, supervise and confer with health aides and others providing health services to students
● Must be able to perform specialized procedures and medication administration under the direction of the Medical Advisor and in collaboration with the Wisconsin DPI Nursing Consultant
● Must maintain professionalism and confidentiality as a representative of the Wausau School District
● Must have basic computer skills the applications such as Word, Excel, Google Docs
● Attend workshops and in-services to maintain professional competencies
● Maintain certification in CPR and first aid

EDUCATION:
Required: Bachelor of Science in Nursing
Desired: Additional accreditation related to nursing/school health

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
● Advocate for quality student-centered health care
● Identify and manage students’ health concerns so they are ready to learn
● Act as a liaison between home and school by communicating with parents regarding student’s health and safety needs
● Collaborate with physicians and other health care providers to plan for care of students with health care needs at school
● Develop and maintain health care plans for students who need special nursing interventions during the school day
● Provide and/or delegate services including first aid, care for ill students, and emergency care to students and staff
● Provide/supervise services to students with specialized health care procedures, e.g. blood glucose monitoring, catheterizing, gastric tube feeding, oral suctioning
● Oversee medication administration and monitor effectiveness of medications
● Provide health counseling, interventions, referrals, and follow-up for students
● Train, supervise, and evaluate all staff who work with students for health purposes
● Participate in health evaluations for Individual Education Plan (IEP), Student Assistance Team (SAT), and 504 meetings
● Provide school staff with information about students’ health concerns and care on a confidential, need-to-know basis
● Train staff on emergency medication administration and student’s Individual Health Plan
● Maintain health record for each student and a record of all nursing services provided.
● Maintain confidentiality regarding all school and health-related issues
● Develop, revise, and implement health policies and procedures
● Act as a member of the crisis intervention team and participate in school safety plans that address school violence, bullying, and other emergencies that may occur at school
● Monitor student immunization status and follow up on non-compliant students
● Collaborate with other school nurses
● Collaborate with school district and community partners to enhance student health and wellness of the student population
● Coordinate CPR and First Aid classes for district personnel

Expected hours: 40.0 per week
