Release Engineer

Job Purpose

Enable secure, reliable and repeatable software releases by establishing and operating automated build, test and deployment capabilities across Sun Life Malaysia's digital solutions. Design and maintain CI/CD pipelines, release automation and deployment controls, integrating code quality, security and automated testing into the delivery process while ensuring release traceability, production readiness and effective rollback.

Major Accountabilities

Design, build and maintain CI/CD pipelines to automate application build, testing, code-quality and security checks, artefact management and deployment across application environments.

Develop and maintain automated release and deployment processes, including application packaging, versioning, environment promotion, deployment validation and rollback/recovery mechanisms.

Integrate automated testing, code-quality and security controls into deployment pipelines to establish consistent engineering quality gates before applications progress through release stages.

Partner with developers, test automation engineers, infrastructure, cybersecurity and operations teams to define deployment requirements, resolve pipeline and environment dependencies and support production readiness.

Maintain release traceability and technical documentation covering application versions, build outputs, test and security results, deployment artefacts, configurations and release outcomes.

Review and continuously improve internal and vendor release practices, deployment automation and CI/CD standards to improve consistency, reliability and controlled delivery of applications into production.

Required Skills and Competencies

• CI/CD pipeline design, implementation and maintenance

• Source control, branching strategies, versioning and code-review workflows using Git or equivalent approved tools

• Build automation, application packaging, artefact management and environment promotion

• Automated deployment across development, testing and production environments

• Integration of automated testing, code-quality and security checks into CI/CD pipelines

• DevSecOps practices, secure deployment and automated engineering quality gates

• Containerization, cloud-native deployment and Infrastructure-as-Code concepts

• Release validation, rollback, recovery and production-readiness practices

• Scripting, deployment automation, troubleshooting and application observability

• Collaboration across application development, quality assurance, cybersecurity, infrastructure/cloud, operations and vendors

Qualification and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, interaction design or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.

• A portfolio or code repository demonstrating reusable components, accessible interfaces and high-fidelity design implementation.

• At least 4 years of DevOps, release engineering, software engineering or deployment automation experience supporting production applications.

• Demonstrated experience designing, implementing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines, automated builds and application deployment processes.

• Experience working with source control, artefact management, automated testing, code-quality and security controls within software delivery pipelines.

• Experience with deployment automation, environment promotion, release validation, rollback and production-readiness practices.

• Experience working closely with application developers, quality engineers, cybersecurity, infrastructure/cloud and operations teams in agile delivery environments.

• Experience reviewing vendor output and working within enterprise engineering and security standards is preferred.
