Reliability Technician

Job Purpose

The Reliability Technician is responsible for executing preventative and predictive maintenance programs to improve equipment reliability and reduce unplanned downtime in industrial manufacturing environments. This role applies condition-based monitoring techniques, performs root cause analysis, and supports continuous improvement initiatives to ensure optimal equipment performance and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities & Job Description

1. Predictive & Preventive Maintenance

• Conduct regular inspections and use specialized tools for predictive maintenance tasks including vibration analysis, thermography, oil analysis, and ultrasonic inspection
• Perform daily vibration analysis on electrical and mechanical equipment, developing and maintaining inspection catalogs for long-term trending
• Oversee oil analysis program: evaluate lube oil analysis results, write work orders for corrective actions identified, and coordinate with Maintenance Planner for timely completion
• Conduct thermal imaging and infrared scans on electrical and mechanical equipment; develop/maintain thermography inspection catalog
• Complete planned plant inspection routes and first/second-level inspections on critical equipment
• Carry out lubrication activities on both running and stopped plant equipment

2. Reliability Improvement & Root Cause Analysis

• Investigate equipment failures and assist in root cause analysis (RCA) to identify and implement corrective actions
• Perform downtime analysis to determine root causes of unscheduled stoppages
• Develop and implement short and long-term continuous improvement strategies related to plant reliability
• Classify breakdowns and analyze gaps in the entire process of design, fabrication, and maintenance of equipment
• Utilize root cause analysis thought process to ensure sustainability of corrective actions and/or improvements to drive asset reliability
• Analyze CMMS data to develop action plans to permanently solve problems by addressing the root cause

3. Maintenance & Troubleshooting

• Perform preventative and corrective maintenance, ensuring proper calibration of test equipment and maintaining spare parts inventory
• Troubleshoot pneumatic, hydraulic, AC/DC electrical systems, automation & instrumentation, and mechanical systems on all process and packaging equipment
• Diagnose faults by observing equipment in operation, disassembling, repairing/replacing components, adjusting controls, and validating with functional tests
• Perform mechanical repair and troubleshooting of bearings, gearboxes, couplings, drives, motors, and other equipment components
• Troubleshoot process control systems and navigate industrial control systems to analyze complex equipment

4. Data Management & Documentation

• Collect and analyze equipment performance data, generate reports on test findings, and maintain accurate records
• Gather and analyze reliability data from production floor and databases; apply statistical analysis, engineering techniques, and reliability practices to interpret data
• Input and manage maintenance work orders in Computerized Maintenance Management Software (CMMS/SAP)
• Develop SOPs for maintenance tasks relative to process reliability
• Assist in developing PM and PDM tasks to reflect the results of reliability activities
• Maintain equipment BOMs for existing equipment as well as creating BOMs for newly installed or modified equipment
• Oversight and maintenance of engineering drawings and documents, including cataloging, upgrading legacy blueprints, and electronic storage

5. Spare Parts & Inventory Management

• Provide justification and assist in the purchase of critical spare parts
• Research and make recommendations to the Engineering Team for new stock items or substitutes for current stock items
• Ensure storeroom processes are followed for accurate inventory

6. Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Work with engineers and maintenance teams to develop reliability improvement plans and provide technical input
• Collaborate closely with production, mechanical maintenance, and electrical maintenance departments
• Coordinate with Maintenance Planner and Scheduler to ensure timely completion of work orders
• Train operators on maintenance techniques when called to troubleshoot or repair equipment
• Provide technical training to operators on autonomous maintenance practices

7. Safety & Compliance

• Understand and comply with Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) policies, ensuring environment, health, and safety are the first priority
• Follow all safety protocols and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including respirators where required
• Certified to perform lockout-tag out procedures
• Maintain 5S methodology to maintain a clean, sanitary, and safe work area
• Follow QMS and Good Manufacturing Practices

Qualifications & RequirementsEducation

• High School diploma/GED required; Associate degree in Electrical/Mechanical field or technical certification preferred
• Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline may be preferred for some roles

Experience

• Minimum 3 years industrial maintenance experience required; 5+ years preferred for some positions
• Experience in heavy manufacturing, continuous process environment, or panel production preferred
• Experience working in a CMMS environment required

Technical Knowledge

• Strong working knowledge of mechanical systems, rotating equipment, and process maintenance
• Experience performing preventive and predictive maintenance: vibration analysis, thermography, oil sampling, ultrasonic inspection
• Proficient in hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic systems
• Familiar with SAP or similar CMMS systems for work order management, reliability tracking, and equipment history
• Experience with root cause failure analysis (RCFA) and reliability improvement initiatives
• Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, schematics, and P&IDs
• Understanding of fundamental lubrication, vibration, infrared, and general maintenance concepts
• PLC programming and fault finding (preferred for electrical-focused roles)
