Responsibilities

• Provide accurate, culturally sensitive interpretation for medical appointments, hospital visits, and telehealth consultations across multiple languages, including American Sign Language if applicable.
• Facilitate communication between healthcare providers and patients by interpreting spoken language during clinical encounters, ensuring comprehension of diagnoses, treatment plans, and medical instructions.
• Conduct over-the-phone interpretation (OPI) and video remote interpretation (VRI) services to support urgent and non-urgent medical needs.
• Review and translate medical records, documentation, and patient histories with precision, adhering to clinical confidentiality policies and HIPAA compliance standards.
• Maintain detailed records of interpretation sessions, including documentation review notes and service logs, following clinical ethical guidelines.
• Uphold professional ethics by respecting patient privacy, demonstrating cultural competency, and adhering to hospital policies on clinical cultural standards.
• Collaborate with social workers, child protective services, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient support through effective cross-cultural communication.

Requirements

• Multilingual proficiency with fluency in English plus at least one additional language; certification in American Sign Language is a plus.
• Proven experience in medical interpretation or translation within healthcare environments such as hospitals or clinics.
• Strong knowledge of medical terminology and the ability to translate complex medical concepts accurately.
• Familiarity with interpretation modalities including over-the-phone (OPI), video remote interpretation (VRI), and in-person services.
• Demonstrated understanding of HIPAA regulations, clinical confidentiality policies, and ethical standards for healthcare interpreters.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey information clearly across diverse cultural backgrounds.
• Experience working within clinical settings such as hospitals or social service agencies is preferred.
• Ability to handle sensitive situations with professionalism while maintaining composure under pressure.
