About the Role 🌏

We're growing our renewable energy and energy storage business in Japan 🇯🇵 and are looking for a Japan Renewable Energy & Investment Analyst to join our market analysis team in Shanghai.

You'll be a key link between three teams: market analysis in Shanghai, project development in Japan and capital markets in Japan.

Your work will cover Japan renewable energy market research, project financial analysis and cross-team coordination. You'll also support project discussions and financing activities with Japanese banks, financial institutions, investors and other business partners.

This isn't a pure market research role. We're looking for someone with strong analytical and financial modeling skills, good commercial judgement, and the ability to explain projects and financial concepts clearly in Japanese.

Key Responsibilities 💼

🔍 Japan Renewable Energy Market Research

• Follow developments in Japan's energy storage, solar and wider renewable energy markets
• Research Japan's electricity market, battery storage market, capacity market, ancillary services, power trading mechanisms, grid connection policies and relevant regulations
• Track renewable energy investments, project financing, M&A deals and key market players in Japan
• Analyze market data, regulatory changes and project economics to support development and investment decisions
• Take part in meetings and discussions with Japanese banks, financial institutions, investors and other project partners
• Communicate clearly in business Japanese on topics such as: Renewable energy and energy storage market trends in Japan; Project development strategies and timelines; Business models and revenue structures; Financial models, key assumptions and investment returns; Project risks and sensitivity analysis
• Prepare the financial models, market research, project analysis and presentations that lenders and investors need

📊 Financial Modeling & Investment Analysis

• Build and maintain financial models for battery energy storage (BESS), solar and other renewable energy projects in Japan
• Analyze project revenues, CAPEX, OPEX, financing structures, cash flows and investment returns
• Run IRR, NPV, DSCR, debt capacity and sensitivity analyses
• Update models as projects progress and as market pricing and financing assumptions change

🤝 Cross-functional Coordination

• Share and align information between the Japan project development team, the Shanghai market analysis team and the Japan capital markets team
• Bring together project information on development progress, grid connection, land, permits and other key workstreams into clear, structured materials
• Turn market and financial analysis into practical input for the project development and capital markets teams
• Support coordination across project development, financing and investor engagement
• Prepare market reports, project analysis reports and decision-support materials for management

Requirements ✅

🎓 Education & Experience

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Finance, Economics, Accounting, Energy, Power Systems, Engineering or a related field
• Ideally 2 to 6 years of experience in renewable energy, power, energy storage, infrastructure, finance or consulting

🧠 Skills & Competencies

• Strong business-level Japanese: you can join Japanese business meetings on your own and explain a project's commercial logic and financial model in Japanese 🇯🇵
• Strong Excel financial modeling skills, with the ability to build or review project models independently
• Solid understanding of corporate finance, project investment, cash flow analysis and financing structures
• Good commercial judgement, with the ability to assess projects from an investment, financing and commercial feasibility point of view
• Strong analytical and communication skills, and the ability to turn complex market and project information into clear conclusions
• Comfortable working in an international, cross-functional environment and coordinating between teams in China and Japan
• Working proficiency in English, enough to read industry materials and handle everyday business communication
• Willing to travel to Japan frequently ✈️

⭐ Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with one or more of these backgrounds will stand out:

• Previous experience at a bank, securities firm, fund, investment firm, Big Four, consulting firm or renewable energy developer
• Background in Project Finance, Infrastructure Investment, Corporate Finance or Investment Analysis
• Hands-on experience working with Japanese banks, financial institutions, investors or large corporations
• Familiarity with Japan's electricity market, BESS market or renewable energy development process
• Mandarin Chinese, to work smoothly with our Shanghai-based team 🇨🇳
