What they need
Research Associate II / Senior Research Associate – Surface Chemistry (Contract)
Position Summary
We are seeking a Research Associate II / Senior Research Associate to support production-oriented execution of surface functionalization processes for a biosensor device platform. This is a hands-on laboratory role focused on executing established batch processes, generating consistent and well-documented results, and supporting pilot-scale and production-scale activities.
The ideal candidate has prior industry laboratory experience and can independently perform batch processing activities after initial training. Strong execution, attention to detail, and reliability are critical. As the program evolves, there may be opportunities to contribute to broader experimental and research initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute surface functionalization batch processes, including self-assembled monolayers (SAM), silane chemistries, hydrogels, and brush polymer coatings, in accordance with established SOPs and batch records.
- Independently perform surface characterization using fluorescence-based uniformity assays, contact angle measurements, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and cyclic voltammetry (CV).
- Analyze and summarize characterization data, including surface thickness, density, uniformity, and charge properties, and identify trends that may impact assay performance.
- Support development of nucleotide-based assay consumables and biofunctionalized surface technologies, including oligonucleotide/probe immobilization, hybridization assays, and bioconjugation workflows.
- Assist with surface deposition and patterning processes such as spin coating, dip coating, spray coating, plasma treatment, and surface activation.
- Support Design of Experiments (DOE) studies by executing test plans, performing basic statistical analysis, and summarizing findings.
- Accurately document experimental procedures, observations, and results in laboratory notebooks and electronic laboratory notebook (ELN) systems.
- Identify, document, and assist in investigating process deviations and unexpected results.
- Maintain inventory of reagents, consumables, and laboratory supplies required for daily operations.
- Ensure laboratory and cleanroom spaces are maintained according to established procedures and safety standards.
- Collaborate closely with scientists and project team members while independently resolving routine technical issues and escalating more complex challenges.
Required Qualifications
- Hands-on experience working with surface and interfacial materials such as 2D surfaces, microarrays, flow cells, nanoparticles, membranes, or related systems.
- Experience performing analytical characterization techniques, including fluorescence-based assays, contact angle measurements (goniometry), or similar methods.
- Familiarity with nucleotide-based assay chemistries or biofunctionalized surface technologies, including probe immobilization, hybridization assays, and bioconjugation.
- Proven ability to execute batch or production processes independently with high accuracy and consistency.
- Working knowledge of DOE methodologies and basic statistical analysis techniques, including ANOVA, regression analysis, or related approaches.
- Experience with structured documentation practices, including batch records, electronic laboratory notebooks (ELNs), and GDP-compliant recordkeeping.
- Strong problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with biosensor development or diagnostics-related technologies.
- Exposure to plasma treatment, surface activation, photolithography, PECVD, CVD, or related thin-film processing techniques.
- Experience supporting pilot-scale manufacturing or process development environments.
- Familiarity with assay performance metrics such as signal strength, specificity, and non-specific binding.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, or a related scientific discipline.
- Minimum of 2-4 years of hands-on industry laboratory experience in surface chemistry, materials characterization, biosensors, biointerfaces, or related fields.
- Equivalent combination of education and relevant industry experience will be considered.
