About the Grasslands Initiative

ATREE’s Grasslands Initiative (TGI) is a mission-mode initiative to advance the recognition, conservation, restoration and sustainable management of India’s grasslands and other open natural ecosystems (ONEs). The initiative aims to support landscape-scale restoration and management across priority grassland regions of India, while ensuring that ecological outcomes, local livelihoods and the rights of local communities are secured.

Role Overview

The Research Associate will support TGI’s research and knowledge generation, working at the intersection of ecology, livelihoods and policy. The role involves reviewing literature, analysing data, documenting field experiences and translating research into actionable insights for landscape restoration, programme development and policy engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct literature reviews and synthesise research on grasslands, restoration, pastoralism, fodder systems, biodiversity and climate resilience.

  • Support field studies, landscape assessments and documentation of conservation and restoration initiatives.

  • Collect, organise and analyse ecological, socio-economic and spatial data.

  • Assist in developing research frameworks, indicators and monitoring approaches for TGI’s landscape interventions.

  • Review relevant government policies, programmes and financing mechanisms.

  • Prepare research reports, policy briefs, presentations and other knowledge products.

  • Coordinate with research institutions, field partners and other stakeholders to support collaborative research.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Geography, Environmental Economics, Development Studies or a related discipline.

  • 0–2 years of relevant experience after the Master’s degree; fresh graduates with strong research skills are encouraged to apply.

  • Strong analytical, writing and communication skills.

  • Familiarity with qualitative or quantitative research methods and data analysis.

  • Knowledge of GIS tools or statistical software such as R, Python or Stata is desirable.

  • Interest in grasslands, restoration ecology, pastoral livelihoods, environmental policy or rural development.
