The Role

We are looking for an early-career Research Scientist to contribute to applied research projects focused on improving orchard productivity, fruit quality, and grower returns.

This role offers hands-on experience across orchard, laboratory, and post-harvest research while building skills in experimental design, data analysis, scientific communication, and stakeholder engagement.

Ideal for someone with 1-2 years' experience, this position provides the opportunity to grow your career within a supportive team, with mentoring and ongoing professional development.

The successful applicant will be based in Mount Maunganui.

Key Responsibilities

• Contribute to orchard and post-harvest research projects.
• Assist with the design and implementation of field and laboratory trials.
• Collect, analyse, and interpret research data.
• Prepare technical reports and assist with client presentations.
• Collaborate with growers, industry partners, and researchers.
• Translate research findings into practical recommendations.

Qualifications and Experience

• A degree in Horticultural Science, Plant Science, Biological Sciences, Environmental Science, Agriculture, or a related field.
• Candidates with up to two years' relevant experience are encouraged to apply.
• Research experience through university projects, internships, postgraduate study, or industry-based roles.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Ability to prepare clear reports and presentations.
• Physically fit and willing to undertake field-based research activities.
• A proactive attitude and genuine desire to learn and develop.

You are a curious and motivated scientist who enjoys solving practical problems through applied research. Equally comfortable in the orchard and working with data, you can turn scientific findings into clear, actionable recommendations.

You are passionate about horticulture, eager to learn, and excited by the opportunity to contribute to New Zealand's horticultural industry. An interest in the kiwifruit sector would be highly valued.
