Job Summary
A position is open for a full-time Research Technician I in the laboratory of Dr. Shannon Stott at the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Boston University. The Stott Lab is looking for a motivated, independent, and organized individual to support our work in microfluidics and imaging. Specifically, we study biomarkers such as extracellular vesicles (EVs) and circulating tumor cells (CTCs), as well as fluorescent imaging of tumor tissues. The candidate will take responsibility for basic science and translational research projects under close supervision of postdoctoral fellows in the lab, as well as Dr. Stott. The experience gained in the lab will be useful for pursuing a career as a researcher or in the clinical field. The experiences and training received in our lab are often ideal for developing competitive applications to graduate or medical schools. We have also had strong success for individuals transitioning to the biotech field.
The Stott laboratory comprises bioengineers and biologists focused on translating technological advances into relevant applications in clinical medicine. Specifically, we are interested in using microfluidics, imaging, and biopreservation technologies to develop tools that deepen our understanding of cancer biology. The Stott laboratory has co-developed innovative microfluidic devices that can isolate extraordinarily rare circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and extracellular vesicles (EVs) from the blood of cancer patients. We also look at tumor specimens using multispectral imaging, hoping that the exploration of the spatial relationships between immune cells and tumor tissue will help us better predict treatment response. This includes collection of and accurate recording of procedures and results, maintenance of databases used in the lab, ordering necessary reagents to conduct experiments, and participation in joint upkeep of the lab. This is a full-time position with benefits. A two-year commitment is required.
All qualified applicants will receive full consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status. Indigenous, LGBTQIA+, gender nonconforming, people of color or other minorities, and women are highly encouraged to apply.
Duties
Research Technician I is a full-time position that serves to assist Principal Investigators in a research laboratory. Principal duties are to assist in experiments for research projects under the supervision of the project head and Dr. Stott. The candidate will not be working in a clinical setting. All duties are outlined below:
- Performing laboratory experiments utilizing standard techniques and equipment, including cell culture, operating microfluidic devices, DNA/RNA extraction, western blotting, ddPCR, tissue staining and imaging.
- Instructing other staff and students in basic laboratory techniques.

- Performing related laboratory maintenance such as organizing/cleaning equipments and ordering supplies.
- Performing routine logging and testing of samples.
- Prepare chemical reagents and biological samples following chemical handling safety procedures and sterile laboratory techniques.
- Handling clinical samples for direct analyses of human tumor circulating tumor cells, extracellular vesicles and tumor tissues. Must be comfortable with handling previously collected blood, plasma, tissue, CSF and saliva in a safe and controlled environment.
- Maintain accurate and detailed laboratory records in accordance with laboratory standard operating procedures (SOPs) and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards.
- Support quality control processes by monitoring experimental conditions, documenting results, and troubleshooting technical issues.
- Follow laboratory safety protocols diligently to maintain a safe working environment for all team members.
- Collaborate with team members on multiple activities, contributing to experimental design and implementation within a research setting.
