Retail Optical Assistant

About the role

Specsavers Onehunga is seeking an enthusiastic and customer-focused Retail Optical Assistant to join our team. This is a full-time position including working working Both Weekend Days based in Onehunga, Auckland. As a Retail Optical Assistant, you will play a vital role in delivering exceptional customer service whilst supporting our optical dispensing operations. You will be at the heart of our customer experience, assisting both our clinical and retail teams to ensure every customer receives outstanding service and leaves our store satisfied with their eyewear solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Providing warm, welcoming customer service to all visitors, greeting customers promptly and identifying their eyewear needs
• Processing customer transactions accurately using our point-of-sale systems, handling cash and card payments with precision
• Assisting with the dispensing of glasses and contact lenses, including lens fitting and adjustment support
• Maintaining product displays and ensuring the retail environment is clean, organized and visually appealing
• Stocking shelves with optical frames, accessories and retail products in an orderly manner
• Supporting optometrists and dispensing opticians with patient preparation and administrative tasks
• Answering customer enquiries regarding products, services and pricing with confidence and product knowledge
• Processing online orders and managing customer returns or exchanges as required
• Maintaining confidentiality and following health and safety protocols within the optical retail environment
• Contributing to a positive team atmosphere and supporting colleagues during busy periods

What we're looking for

• Previous retail or customer service experience, ideally within optical or healthcare environments
• Strong communication skills with the ability to engage positively with diverse customers
• Excellent numeracy and accuracy, particularly when handling transactions and stock
• Reliability and punctuality with the ability to work flexibly within a retail environment
• Basic IT skills and familiarity with point-of-sale systems or willingness to learn quickly
• A genuine passion for customer service and problem-solving
• Physical ability to stand for extended periods and lift moderate weights
• Attention to detail and the ability to maintain accurate records
• Experience in the optical industry or eyewear retail is highly desirable but not essential for enthusiastic candidates
