Role overview

The Retail Supervisor is responsible for helping to maintain an attractive, well-stocked and commercially successful garden centre. This is a practical, hands-on supervisory role. The role holder spends most of their time working alongside the retail team, serving customers, replenishing stock, merchandising displays and completing everyday retail tasks. They also provide direction, training and support to retail assistants, ensuring that work is completed safely and to the required standard. Good horticultural knowledge is essential, as the role involves identifying plants and products, understanding customers’ requirements and providing reliable gardening advice.

Main responsibilities

• Provide friendly, knowledgeable and professional customer service.
• Advise customers on plants, gardening products, plant care and product suitability.
• Work alongside the retail team on tills, stock replenishment, merchandising, housekeeping and other rou-tine duties.
• Allocate work and provide day-to-day direction to retail assistants.
• Train and support team members, ensuring that procedures and service standards are understood and fol-lowed.
• Maintain high standards of presentation, cleanliness, pricing and stock availability throughout the retail are-as.
• Monitor stock levels, sales activity, slow-moving products, wastage and seasonal requirements.
• Work with the Operations Manager to select products, raise purchase orders and place orders with approved suppliers.
• Receive and check deliveries, investigate discrepancies and ensure stock is priced and displayed promptly.
• Produce accurate reports on sales, stock and product performance when required.
• Complete authorised cashing-up, reconciliation and banking procedures.
• Help manage customer enquiries, complaints, returns and refunds in accordance with company proce-dures.
• Monitor compliance with health and safety, hygiene, fire safety and security procedures.
• Support opening and closing procedures where authorised.
• Assist in other departments when reasonably required.

Skills and experience

Essential

• The flexibility to work weekdays and alternate weekends.
• Good practical horticultural knowledge and the ability to give customers reliable gardening advice.
• Previous retail supervisory, senior retail or equivalent experience.
• A friendly, helpful and confident approach to customers.
• The ability to lead by example and work constructively with colleagues.
• A practical attitude and willingness to undertake routine retail work alongside the team.
• The ability to work independently, use initiative and make sensible decisions within company procedures.
• Good organisational skills and the ability to prioritise work during busy periods.
• Basic computer skills.
• An understanding of stock control, merchandising and the importance of accurate pricing.
• The ability to identify appropriate sales opportunities without placing customers under pressure.
• A reliable, flexible approach and a strong work ethic.

Desirable

• Experience of the WinRetail EPOS system would be helpful, although training will be provided.

The role involves standing, walking and the safe movement of stock during much of the working day. Reasonable ad-justments will be considered where appropriate. This description outlines the main responsibilities of the role. The Retail Supervisor may be asked to undertake other reasonable duties appropriate to the position.
