What they need
Position Overview
The Company is seeking a detail-oriented Revenue Accountant to own our revenue cycle. You will ensure that our top-line numbers are accurate, compliant, and properly recognized, in accordance with US GAAP and ASC 606. Central to this role is understanding multiple, distinct revenue streams tied to state public school funding mechanisms and translating that understanding into compliant revenue recognition, accurate invoicing, and reliable monthly projections of revenue and cash receipts.
The Company implemented NetSuite in May 2025. The Revenue Accountant will lead the setup of NetSuite Advanced Revenue Management (ARM), supported by an implementation partner, and will serve as the organization's subject matter expert for revenue. This is a high-ownership,
individual-contributor role that requires technical accounting depth and the ability to explain complex financial information to non-accounting colleagues.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Revenue Recognition: Review customer contracts to determine appropriate revenue recognition in accordance with ASC 606, applying sound judgment to the terms, timing, conditions, and variability of each arrangement, including non-standard contract language.
- Revenue Streams: Analyze the characteristics of each revenue stream (funding source, timing, conditions, and variability) to determine the recognition approach, support accurate invoicing, and develop reliable monthly projections of revenue and cash receipts on accounts receivable.
- NetSuite ARM Implementation: Lead the setup and rollout of NetSuite Advanced Revenue Management (ARM), which is not yet active, working with the VP Controller, Assistant Controller, and our external implementation partner. Responsibilities include defining revenue recognition rules, configuring revenue arrangements and plans, testing, documentation, go-live, and training the finance team.
- Month-End Close: Prepare revenue-related journal entries and account reconciliations, including deferred revenue, accounts receivable, and AR reserves. Maintain deferred revenue schedules with supportable documentation.
- Reporting & Analysis: Generate monthly revenue reports, investigate discrepancies, and perform analytical reviews of revenue and gross margin trends.
- Invoicing & Customer Coordination: Coordinate with school district finance departments and internal commercial teams to manage invoicing, resolve contract discrepancies, and ensure billing terms are accurately reflected in the financial records.
- Budget & Modeling: Prepare annual revenue budgets and monthly forecast updates with commercial leadership and the VP Controller. Update current state revenue Excel models and build models for new states that calculate revenue based on enrollment, retention, and academic achievement. Research federal, state, and local education funding opportunities by state to ensure available funding is fully utilized.
- Audit Support: Serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors regarding revenue testing, providing schedules, contract documentation, and process walkthroughs. Support internal audit requests and compliance reviews.
- Policy & Process Improvement: Maintain and improve revenue accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls. Identify bottlenecks in the order-to-cash process and help implement automation or system enhancements.
- Internal Partnership: Serve as the internal resource for revenue questions from non-finance teams, explaining accounting treatment in clear business terms.
Knowledge, Skills & Attributes
- Technical Expertise: Deep understanding of US GAAP and ASC 606, with demonstrated experience applying it to non-standard, variable, or multi-element contracts, including interpreting complex contract language and applying judgment across multiple revenue streams.
- NetSuite: NetSuite ERP proficiency is required. Hands-on experience with NetSuite ARM is strongly preferred; experience implementing or configuring ARM is a significant plus.
- Tools: Advanced Excel skills (complex models, pivot tables, formula-driven projections). Experience with Google Workspace; working familiarity with SharePoint for document management.
- Funding Structures: Familiarity with public school or government funding is a plus. The ability to quickly analyze unfamiliar funding or contract structures (how money flows, when it is recognized, and how it should be projected) is essential and transfers from any industry with complex revenue arrangements.
- Analytical Rigor: Outstanding problem-solver who thinks critically, builds structured financial models, and performs detailed data analysis with high accuracy.
- Communication: Strong written and verbal communication, with the ability to explain complex financial ideas clearly via email and chat, coordinate across departments, and handle sensitive information with discretion.
- Detail Orientation: Exceptional attention to detail and organization when managing multiple revenue streams and varying contract terms under tight monthly deadlines.
- Remote Mastery: Proven ability to work independently in a fully remote environment, with a stable home-office setup and a private, secure, high-speed internet connection.
- Mission Alignment: Passionately committed to the mission of The Company.
Education & Certification Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance is required.
- 3+ years of accounting experience with a heavy focus on revenue recognition, including demonstrated experience reviewing customer contracts and applying ASC 606.
- CPA license or active pursuit of CPA certification is preferred.
