What they need

HDI Global SE is Germany’s leading industrial insurer. Since 1995, we have supported German and European companies operating across Australia and New Zealand. Today, we also partner with Australian and New Zealand corporate clients through our Sydney headquarters and offices in Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.

As a specialist industrial lines insurer, HDI delivers tailored insurance solutions for SMEs, industrial businesses and corporate customers. With operations spanning more than 175 countries through branch offices, subsidiaries, peer companies and network partners, we combine local expertise with global reach to protect clients wherever they operate.

The opportunity:

We are looking for an experienced Senior Risk Engineer to join our market-leading Risk Engineering practice, HDI Risk Consulting (HRC), with a dedicated focus on the construction sector. This is an opportunity to apply your engineering expertise to complex, high-profile projects while helping clients understand, manage and reduce risk.

You will provide practical risk consulting services across landmark and diverse projects, including mixed-use developments, civil and power infrastructure, industrial facilities and chemical operations. With construction risk as your primary focus, you will work closely with clients, underwriters and a collaborative team of multidisciplinary engineers. The role involves approximately 50 days of travel each year, predominantly across Australia and New Zealand.

  • Work across an exceptional range of construction projects, from transport infrastructure, tunnelling and large residential developments to warehousing, manufacturing, mining, power generation and renewable energy projects across Australia and New Zealand.
  • Build your expertise through training and development across HRC’s key assessment areas, including:

* Fire / explosion risks.

* Geotechnical risks.

* Machinery breakdown risks.

* Natural Catastrophe risks.

* Business interruption risks.

  • Join an experienced, multidisciplinary engineering team that will support your technical growth and ongoing development.

In this role, you will:

  • Deliver loss prevention engineering and consultancy services.
  • Evaluate construction-site and property hazards and prepare clear, practical risk reports.
  • Identify and quantify exposures across industrial properties.
  • Assess the adequacy and operational effectiveness of protection systems.
  • Evaluate clients’ in-house loss prevention programs.
  • Partner with senior client stakeholders to develop practical strategies that reduce fire risk.
  • Prepare risk information for underwriters ahead of insurance renewals.
  • Complete desktop reviews of insurance submissions and risk reports for underwriting purposes.
  • Deliver loss prevention seminars that build client awareness and capability.
  • Manage risk engineering fees, costs and payments.

The role is ideally based in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane; however, we welcome applications from experienced risk engineers located anywhere in Australia.

About you

  • A bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering preferred.
  • At least five years’ experience in an engineering consulting environment and a minimum of 10 years’ overall industry experience.
  • Construction risk engineering experience is preferred.
  • Excellent organisational and project management skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven technical report-writing and presentation experience, with the ability to make complex information clear and engaging for non-technical audiences.
  • A proactive, motivated approach and enthusiasm for taking on new challenges.
  • The ability to build and maintain trusted client relationships.
  • Australian citizenship or permanent residency.

Salary and Benefits:

We offer a competitive salary package and flexible hybrid working, with the option to work from home two to three days per week.

You will join a values-led, dynamic workplace that supports flexibility, collaboration and continuous learning, with a development framework designed to help you grow.

This is an opportunity to build a long-term career with an established international insurer while contributing to high-profile projects across Australia and New Zealand. HDI is an equal opportunity employer, and we believe diversity and inclusion are essential to our future.
