What they need

We are looking for an experienced Robotics Software Engineer to develop the software that turns biological procedures into automated robotic workflows.

You will develop and maintain a library of robotic actions that forms the foundation for increasingly complex biological workflows. This includes programming robot movements, integrating laboratory devices, handling physical constraints and edge cases, and ensuring that actions can be safely and reliably combined.

At the same time, you will take ownership of the software architecture that drives the robot. An important part of the role is to improve and restructure our existing machine control code, including motion control, machine drivers, hardware abstractions, and interfaces between higher-level workflows and physical devices.

We work closely with our in-house scientists: you will clarify requirements, plan implementation, gather feedback from internal tests, and challenge feature requests.

Our goal is not to blindly implement features, but to build a consistent, usable product with a clear software philosophy.

Our Tech Stacks

Web App/Cloud

  • Next.js/React/TypeScript
  • PostgreSQL
  • WebSocket/REST
  • Docker
  • Tailscale/Cloudflare

Robot/Embedded Systems (your focus)

  • python/flask
  • C(++)
  • CAN/RS232/I2C/SPI

Responsibilities

  • Translate biological procedures into reliable robotic workflows.
  • Develop a reusable library of robotic actions.
  • Program and optimize robot movements and laboratory device interactions.
  • Improve and refactor our robot-control architecture, including motion control, drivers, and hardware abstractions.
  • Test and debug software on real robotic hardware.
  • Collaborate closely with scientists and engineers from concept to implementation.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of professional software development experience, ideally in robotics, automation, embedded systems, or laboratory automation.
  • Proven experience developing, debugging, and deploying software used in real-world applications.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong Python skills and experience building maintainable software architectures.
  • Experience controlling and debugging real-world machines or hardware.
  • Understanding of motion control, machine/device drivers, or hardware communication.
  • Ability to understand physical processes and translate them into robust software.
  • Interest in biological laboratory workflows; experience in life sciences or lab automation is a strong advantage.
  • Familiarity with version control, CI/CD, and modern software development workflows.
  • Strong communication skills in English and German (min. C1 or equivalent)
  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic environment with changing needs and requirements.

Note about AI/LLM usage
We use AI/LLM tools in development, but this role requires strong engineering fundamentals. You should understand architecture, design, protocols, safety, and performance, and be able to use AI tools critically and responsibly.

What we offer

  • Join a fast-growing, VC-funded startup and help shape our product portfolio.
  • A clear product direction with the freedom to shape the way.
  • Work in a modern office and lab space in Hamburg-Eppendorf, with supermarket, bakery, and many lunch options in the same building and near by.
  • Modern hardware, typically MacBook Air/Pro; alternatives can be discussed.
  • Wellpass sports membership
  • HVV Profiticket
