Previous barista, restaurant, or leadership experience is preferred, but a strong work ethic, dependability, and willingness to learn are what matter most.

About the Position

The Café Assistant Manager works directly with the Café Manager to oversee daily operations, support employees, maintain quality standards, and ensure the café runs smoothly.

This is a hands-on leadership position. You will work alongside the team, help direct daily activities, train employees, solve problems, and ensure our customers receive fast, friendly, and consistent service.

Our café is a high-volume environment that requires energy, organization, and a willingness to hustle during busy periods. We need someone who can take initiative, keep the team moving, and maintain a positive attitude under pressure.

Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Management

• Assist the Café Manager with daily operations and employee supervision.
• Help lead shifts, delegate tasks, and ensure the team stays productive during busy periods.
• Train, coach, and support baristas and other café employees.
• Help maintain employee accountability, attendance, punctuality, and performance standards.
• Assist with scheduling, shift coverage, and opening and closing procedures.
• Address day-to-day operational issues and communicate important concerns to the Café Manager.
• Lead by example through a strong work ethic, professionalism, and excellent customer service.
• Help build a positive, respectful, and team-oriented workplace.

Customer Service & Café Operations

• Deliver excellent customer service and create a welcoming experience for every guest.
• Learn and confidently operate our point-of-sale (POS) system.
• Become knowledgeable about Rothrock Coffee's products, coffee blends, brewing methods, and menu.
• Prepare espresso drinks, brewed coffee, teas, and other beverages according to company standards.
• Assist with food preparation and service.
• Train team members to follow drink recipes, maintain consistency, and provide efficient service.
• Monitor product availability and communicate inventory and supply needs.
• Help maintain efficient service during peak business hours.

Quality, Safety & Organization

• Ensure beverages and food meet Rothrock Coffee's quality standards.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary café.
• Follow food safety, sanitation, cash-handling, and workplace safety procedures.
• Monitor equipment performance and report maintenance needs.
• Help identify opportunities to improve service, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
• Communicate customer feedback and recommend improvements to management.

Previous barista, restaurant, retail, or supervisory experience is preferred but not required for the right candidate. We will train someone who demonstrates initiative, reliability, and a desire to grow.

A high school diploma or college degree is not required.

Compensation & Career Growth

Starting Pay: $20/hour + Tips

Rothrock Coffee offers a competitive starting wage of $20/hour plus tips for our Café Assistant Manager position. Compensation may increase based on experience, leadership ability, and performance.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

• High-volume coffee shop with busy and slower periods throughout the day and week.
• Active position requiring extended periods of standing, walking, bending, and repetitive upper-body movement.
• Ability to lift and carry coffee supplies, food deliveries, and other café materials as reasonably required by the job, with appropriate assistance or accommodations where applicable.
• Ability to work efficiently under pressure while maintaining attention to detail.
• On-site position at our State College café; remote work is not available.
