Key Responsibilities
Product Distribution and Delivery
- Pick up, transport, and deliver bakery products to assigned retail stores and customer locations.

- Stock and merchandise bakery products on store shelves and displays.
- Rotate inventory to maintain product freshness and remove outdated or damaged products according to company policies.
Ordering and Inventory Management
- Review inventory levels, sales trends, and store demand to determine appropriate product orders.
- Place orders to maintain adequate inventory while minimizing overstock, waste, and unsold products.
- Monitor expiration dates, product returns, shortages, and damaged merchandise.
- Maintain accurate records of deliveries, sales, inventory, returns, and product adjustments.
Sales and Customer Service

- Identify opportunities to increase sales through improved merchandising, product placement, and promotional displays.

- Maintain a reliable vehicle suitable for the route's operational requirements.
- Follow applicable food-handling, transportation, workplace safety, and traffic regulations.

- Maintain reliable service and professional standards at all assigned retail locations.
Required Skills and Qualifications

- Ability to lift, carry, stock, and move bakery products as required.
- Valid driver's license and an appropriate driving record.
- Reliable transportation and the ability to meet the physical demands of the route.
- Ability to work early mornings, weekends, holidays, and other scheduled periods as required.
Work Environment and Schedule
The position involves early-morning starts, frequent driving, repetitive lifting and stocking, extended periods of standing and walking, and regular interaction with retail customers. Work hours and days depend on the assigned route, delivery requirements, and applicable distribution agreement.
Business Responsibilities
As an independent route owner, the operator is generally responsible for managing the business expenses and operational risks allocated to them under their contract. These may include vehicle fuel and maintenance, insurance, labor, inventory-related losses, and other operating costs, depending on the agreement.
Compensation and profitability depend on route sales, applicable settlement terms, operating expenses, product returns or credits, and the owner's ability to manage the business effectively. Revenue is not equivalent to take-home income.
Summary
The Independent Route Owner/Operator position requires the combined skills of a delivery operator, salesperson, merchandiser, inventory manager, and small-business owner. Success depends on reliable service, strong retail relationships, efficient operations, sound inventory control, and the ability to generate sufficient profit to justify the time, labor, and financial investment required to operate the route.
