What they need

CIMMYT is a cutting edge, non-profit, international organization dedicated to solving tomorrow's problems today. It is entrusted with fostering improved quantity, quality, and dependability of production systems and basic cereals such as maize, wheat, triticale, sorghum, millets, and associated crops through applied agricultural science, particularly in the Global South, through building strong partnerships. This combination enhances the livelihood trajectories and resilience of millions of resource-poor farmers, while working towards a more productive, inclusive, and resilient agrifood system within planetary boundaries.

About this Roster Position

This vacancy is intended to identify and assess qualified internal and external candidates for CIMMYT’s Talent Roster. Successful candidates may be considered for future opportunities matching their experience, job family, level and location.

Inclusion in the roster does not constitute an offer or guarantee of employment. Opportunities arise according to project requirements, organizational priorities and the availability of donor funding. When a suitable position becomes available, CIMMYT will reconfirm the candidate’s interest and availability and may conduct a brief role-fit assessment before appointment.

The Research Associate will be based within CIMMYT research teams, including maize, wheat, dryland crops, agronomy, soil science, socioeconomics, breeding support, mechanization or related areas, at country offices, field stations or greenhouse locations. Reports to a Supervising Scientist, Senior Research Associate or Station Manager, depending on assignment and level.

The role delivers the field, laboratory and data work underpinning CIMMYT research programs. Entry-level roles execute established protocols under supervision, while senior roles independently manage research activities, develop methodologies, supervise small teams and contribute to scientific research outputs.

  • Design and implement research methodologies and field or laboratory measurement techniques, including the use of specialized equipment.
  • Maintain and operate research equipment and materials, including germplasm, pathogen cultures and soil-testing kits, as relevant to the discipline.
  • Support or lead household, farm and market surveys, interviews, focus groups and other primary data collection activities.
  • Collect, manage and analyze research data, including database management, statistical analysis and preparation of research progress reports.
  • Coordinate on-farm research with partners, farmers and project teams, including stakeholder meetings, field days and collaboration with research institutions.
  • Train, guide and supervise field or laboratory staff, research partners and students, with increasing responsibility at senior levels.
  • Contribute to technical reports, scientific manuscripts and donor reporting, including lead or co-authorship of publications at senior levels.
  • Manage research assets, inventories and supplies, and support timely procurement and project implementation.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable standard operating procedures (SOPs), research quality standards and occupational health and safety requirements.

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant research experience at entry level, typically 4–5 years at mid-tier and 8+ years at Senior Research Associate level.
  • Senior-level roles require demonstrated ability to independently manage research activities, supervise research staff and contribute to scientific publications or technical research outputs.
  • Strong research, data management, analytical and technical skills relevant to the assigned discipline, with the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, partners and field staff.
