About the Role
Experienced Salesperson with a keen interest in Engines and Diesel Mechanics.
Job Title: Sales & Estimator
Industry: | Engine & Generator Supplier | Diesel Service | Engine Rebuilders & Repair|
Specialisation: Marine, “Off-highway Engines and Generators”
Shaw Diesels Ltd is a trusted name in diesel engine supply, rebuilding, and troubleshooting. For over 35 years, we have built, supplied, and repaired marine, industrial, commercial, and domestic engines and generators nationwide. From agricultural irrigation setups to high-power genset installations for hospitals, ports, and power plants, we are the experts the industry relies on.
Based in our modern, well-equipped workshop on North Shore, Auckland, we work with market-leading brands including DEUTZ, Isuzu, Lister Petter, and Gardner as well as many other. We are a hard-working, tight-knit team that looks out for one another. We are seeking a motivated Sales & Estimator who can seize this opportunity, leverage our reputation, and drive our growth to the next level.
While a trade background gives you a massive head start, we are looking for a true commercial performer. If you have already stepped off the tools into sales—or have a proven knack for closing deals and want to make that leap—this is your breakout opportunity. Your practical, hands-on workshop experience means you won't just be reading from a catalogue; you will instantly understand the mechanics of what our clients need, troubleshoot their issues on the spot, and build the immediate technical credibility required to close deals.
Reporting to: Managing Director
Location: Rosedale, Albany (with nationwide travel)
Key Responsibilities
- Drive Engine & Generator Sales: Promote and sell generators, engines, and associated systems to both the public and established account-based customers.
- Technical Consultation: Work closely with prospective clients to accurately scope their technical requirements and define the exact scope of supply.
- Grow Service Contracts: Promote and secure ongoing maintenance and service contracts for both new and existing engine/generator installations.
- Dealer Network Liaison: Organise, support our nationwide sub-dealer network to ensure seamless sales and service delivery.
- Tenders & Estimation: Research, prepare, and submit comprehensive quotes, enquiries, and formal tender applications.
- Launch Rental Division: Assist with the strategic setup, process development, and market promotion of our expanding generator rental division.
- After-Sales Support: Provide reliable after-sales support to maintain high customer satisfaction. Assist with warranty claim processing.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Mechanical Fluency: You can easily explain how an engine works and possess a rock-solid understanding of mechanical principles and diesel systems.
- Commercial & Financial Acumen: You deeply understand gross margins and know how to package cost-effective solutions that deliver value to the client while protecting our bottom line.
- Proven Sales Track Record: You bring 5+ years of practical sales experience, ideally within an industrial, mechanical, commercial setting.
- Problem-Solving Mindset: A sharp ability to listen to a customer’s needs, figure out the right solution, and adapt to changing project scopes.
- Communication & Tech Skills: Excellent written and oral communication skills coupled with solid computer literacy.
- Education & Eligibility: Completed Year 12 (including NCEA Level 2 Maths and English). You must be a New Zealand citizen or Permanent Resident currently living in NZ.
- Mobility: Willingness and ability to travel nationwide for customer consultations, sub-dealer visits, field days, and site installations.
- Strong Integrity: Able to provide excellent character references from previous employers.
