What they need
About Norman S. Wright Co.
At Norman S. Wright Co., we are dedicated to being the premier commercial HVAC manufacturers representative in the region. Whether supporting complex plan/spec projects or collaborative design/build applications, our expert team delivers exceptional service, top-tier equipment, and unmatched technical expertise across Arizona.
We take pride in our deep industry roots, robust product portfolio, and commitment to working alongside engineers, contractors, and building owners to deliver reliable, efficient HVAC solutions.
Position Overview
We are seeking a high-performing, technical, and people-oriented Sales Engineer to join our team in Phoenix, AZ.
In this unique role, you will bridge the gap between complex HVAC engineering and commercial market growth. Your primary objective is two-fold: serving as our internal technical authority while actively driving market share across the Phoenix metropolitan area.
Rather than a traditional pure-desk or pure-cold-calling sales role, your time will be balanced across two primary focus areas:
- Internal Engineering Support (~30–40%): You will act as a primary technical resource for our internal sales and operations teams. You'll solve complex engineering challenges, assist with intricate equipment selections, analyze system designs, and answer detailed technical questions to ensure project success.
- External Market Expansion (~60–70%): You will hit the local Phoenix market to build and cultivate relationships with engineering firms, mechanical consultants, and design leaders. Your goal is to get Norman S. Wright product lines specified early in the design phase and secured on Basis of Design (BoD) plan schedules.
As part of a collaborative team of sales engineers in Arizona and our broader regional footprint, you will also participate in factory training trips with our manufacturing partners and host customer appreciation events to deepen industry relationships.
If you thrive on solving complex technical challenges, building long-term industry relationships, and driving revenue through technical consultative selling, we want to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Support & Consultation: Act as a primary engineering resource for our sales team, providing technical analysis, equipment selection guidance, and design recommendations.
- Business Development & Market Engagement: Proactively engage and cultivate relationships with engineering firms, mechanical consultants, and key industry decision-makers throughout the Phoenix metropolitan area. Host client appreciation events to build strong, lasting market relationships.
- Specification & Basis of Design (BoD): Work directly with design engineers to specify Norman S. Wright’s product lines into project plans, securing BoD positioning early in the design phase.
- Customer Engagement & Presentations: Deliver technical product presentations, lunch-and-learns, and product updates to engineering firms to highlight performance, efficiency, and engineering advantages.
- Education & Development: Attend periodic off-site industry training to stay ahead of HVAC technology
- Collaborative Strategy: Partner with manufacturers, contractors, and internal operations to ensure smooth project execution from initial specification through final sale.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an accredited university (BS in Mechanical or Architectural Engineering preferred).
- Experience: 2-5+ years of experience in HVAC design, mechanical consulting, or equipment sales (open to design engineers looking to transition into engineering sales). P.E. designation is a plus but not required.
- Technical Aptitude: Strong grasp of commercial HVAC fundamentals, psychrometrics, hydronics, airflow, and equipment selection tools.
- Relationship & Sales Driven: Strong business development mindset with the confidence to hunt for new opportunities, network in the Phoenix market, and deliver engaging technical presentations.
- Software: Familiarity with HVAC selection software is a plus.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to explain complex engineering concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
