What they need

TEST, Inc., located in Peru, IL, is seeking a full-time Sample Login Technician.

NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY. ON-THE-JOB TRAINING PROVIDED.

This position reports to the Laboratory Manager and is often the first point of contact for our clients. Established clients and new customers call or walk in with samples and questions, and you make sure every one of them is helped quickly and correctly. Between calls and visitors, you keep the lab moving by logging in samples, measuring pH, and ordering supplies, and you complete the lab's monthly safety checks.

We will teach you everything you need to know about lab work, testing, and our systems.

Core responsibilities

These four duties are the heart of the job. Sample login and pH checks are daily, ordering is weekly or as needed, and safety checks are monthly.

1. Sample login

  • Receive samples from clients, couriers, and staff, and check containers, labels, and chain-of-custody forms for completeness.
  • Check sample condition on arrival, including temperature, preservation, and holding times, and note any problems.
  • Log samples into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), assigning IDs, tests, and due dates.
  • Label, distribute, and store samples so analysts can find them and holding times are met.
  • Contact clients to resolve missing information before it delays testing.

2. pH samples

  • Calibrate and check the pH meter daily, and record results in the calibration log.
  • Measure pH on incoming samples promptly and accurately.
  • Maintain the pH meter, electrodes, and buffers, and keep the work area clean.

3. Monthly safety checks

  • Once a month, inspect eyewash station and safety shower, and log the results.
  • Verify fume hood airflow monitors and report out-of-range readings.

4. Ordering supplies

  • Order reagents, standards, sample bottles, and lab supplies as directed.
  • Track open orders and back-orders and follow up with vendors on late shipments.
  • Receive deliveries and record lot numbers, receipt dates, and expiration dates.
  • Maintain inventory of chemicals and equipment at acceptable levels and rotate or remove expired stock.
  • Keep Safety Data Sheets (SDS) current for every chemical on site.

First contact with clients

You are often the first point of contact for clients who call or walk in. Your role is to greet them, take care of routine needs, and make sure they reach the right person for everything else.

  • Answer incoming phone calls professionally, and route each call to the right person.
  • Greet walk-in clients, receive their samples, and make sure their paperwork is complete before they leave.
  • Help established clients with routine questions, such as sample drop-off, status, and supplies.
  • Assist new clients looking for advice on testing by gathering basic information and connecting them with the appropriate staff member, who will advise them on testing. Provide sample bottles and instructions as directed.
  • Take clear, accurate messages and make sure they reach the right person the same day.

Additional duties

  • Perform laboratory administrative functions, such as filing paperwork, reviewing data, and entering data into LIMS.
  • Assist with preparing sample bottles and kits for clients, and preparing reagents as required.
  • Assist analysts with basic laboratory analysis as trained.
  • Keep calibration logs, bench sheets, and safety check records complete and up to date.
  • Maintain a clean work area and wash glassware as needed.
  • Follow all laboratory and company policies, safety SOPs, and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Training provided

No lab experience is needed. You will be trained on the job in sample login, LIMS, pH measurement, safety checks, ordering, and client service. You will work alongside experienced staff until you are comfortable handling each task on your own.

Minimum requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Live within 20 miles of Peru, IL.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to apply basic math to perform calculations and measure liquids and solutions accurately.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in person and by phone.

Working conditions

  • Work with samples and chemicals that may give off unpleasant odors; Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is provided.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Occasional overtime.
  • Rotating weekends and holidays.
