Role Objective and Success Criteria

Deliver and maintain a stable, secure, scalable, and high-performing compute and storage foundation for operational technology systems supporting SCADA services.

Support both physical and virtual server platforms, with a strong focus on continuous availability, recoverability, and operational resilience.

Apply lifecycle engineering principles so that server environments remain modern, reliable, and aligned with technical and security standards.

Key Responsibilities and Deliverables

  • Engineer, deploy, and manage the lifecycle of virtual and physical operational technology server environments.
  • Assess server lifecycles and develop maintenance, upgrade, replacement, and migration roadmaps.
  • Plan and execute server replacements and migrations while protecting service continuity and data integrity.
  • Design and validate backup, restore, high-availability, and failover arrangements for business-critical platforms.
  • Monitor performance, health, and capacity proactively, and identify improvements before they affect operations.
  • Analyse incidents, determine root causes, and implement corrective, preventive, and proactive infrastructure improvements.
  • Participate in technical design reviews, acceptance testing, and operational-readiness activities.
  • Plan and record assigned tasks, technical changes, results, and operational knowledge.
  • Maintain clear technical documentation and provide evidence for internal and external audits.

Authority and Accountability

  • Take end-to-end ownership of assigned server infrastructure activities from assessment and design through implementation, validation, and operational handover.
  • Recommend lifecycle and technical improvements based on availability, security, capacity, recoverability, and supportability.
  • Coordinate delivery and issue resolution with internal teams, service owners, suppliers, and other technical stakeholders.
  • Escalate material operational, security, capacity, recovery, or delivery risks through the agreed governance routes.

Technical Skills and Experience

  • Good practical experience in Windows and Linux system administration.
  • Strong knowledge of virtualisation technologies such as VMware and vSAN.
  • Hands-on experience with enterprise server hardware, including platforms from major vendors.
  • Experience with backup, disaster recovery, and patch-management solutions.
  • Proficiency with Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, certificates, and domain-services integration in Windows Server environments.
  • Knowledge of security solutions, with basic familiarity with logging tools such as Splunk or Syslog.
  • Basic understanding of operational technology networks and the requirements of business-critical industrial environments.
  • Ability to maintain and upgrade server infrastructure throughout its lifecycle, including controlled replacements and migrations.
  • Experience preparing server architecture, configuration, procedure, and support documentation.
  • Ability to support technical purchasing, supplier evaluation, and solution validation activities.
  • PowerShell or similar automation experience is advantageous but not essential.

Professional Skills

  • Strong analytical ability and a proactive, structured approach to problem-solving.
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to connect technical requirements with operational needs.
  • Able to work independently across the full delivery lifecycle while collaborating effectively with multiple internal teams and suppliers.
  • Documentation-focused, organised, and dependable, with a consistent commitment to high-quality delivery.

Education and Training

  • Degree in IT Infrastructure, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant professional experience.

Working Conditions

  • The assignment may be extended into 2027, subject to approval of the client's 2027 budget and a subsequent extension request.
  • The role may become subject to security clearance, and candidates must be able to meet the applicable screening requirements.
