What they need
Position Overview
Baumann’s Recycling Center and Chaincraft Iron & Metal are seeking a dependable, organized, and customer-focused Scale Attendant to join our team at our Garfield Heights facility.
The Scale Attendant plays an important role in the day-to-day operations of our recycling and scrap facilities. This position serves as one of the first points of contact for customers, truck drivers, vendors, and company employees entering and leaving the facility. The Scale Attendant is responsible for accurately weighing vehicles, creating scale tickets, processing transactions, maintaining required documentation, and communicating with yard and office personnel to keep traffic moving safely and efficiently.
This is a fast-paced position that requires strong attention to detail, excellent customer service, and the ability to handle multiple responsibilities at once.
Primary Responsibilities
- Operate the truck scale and accurately weigh incoming and outgoing vehicles.
- Create, review, and process scale tickets for incoming and outgoing loads.
- Identify whether customers and trucks are entering for construction and demolition debris, scrap metal, material pickup, or other company business.
- Verify customer, vehicle, material, and load information before completing transactions.
- Direct customers and drivers to the appropriate area of the facility.
- Collect and process cash, checks, and credit/debit card payments when applicable.
- Accurately handle cash and reconcile the scale-house drawer and transactions.
- Maintain organized records of scale tickets, receipts, customer information, and other required documentation.
- Communicate with yard employees, equipment operators, truck drivers, mechanics, and office personnel throughout the day.
- Answer incoming phone calls and assist customers with basic questions regarding facility procedures, accepted materials, hours, and where to report.
- Monitor scale-house and entrance traffic and help maintain an orderly flow of trucks and customers through the property.
- Watch for incorrect, prohibited, or questionable materials and notify management or yard personnel when necessary.
- Assist the office with filing, paperwork, data entry, and other administrative duties as needed.
What We’re Looking For
The ideal candidate is someone who is reliable, accurate, comfortable with customers, and able to think on their feet. Because the scale house is a central point of communication for the facility, this person must be able to remain organized and professional even when multiple trucks, customers, phone calls, and requests are coming in at the same time.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred, but not required.
- Previous experience in a scale house, recycling facility, scrap yard, trucking company, construction company, customer service, cashier, or office environment is a plus, but not required.
- Basic computer and data-entry skills.
- Comfortable learning scale software and company procedures.
- Strong basic math skills and ability to accurately handle cash.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Strong communication and customer-service skills.
- Ability to multitask in a busy industrial environment.
- Dependable attendance and punctuality are essential.
- Ability to communicate professionally with customers, commercial drivers, vendors, and coworkers.
- Willingness to learn the differences between C&D debris, scrap metals, vehicles, and other materials handled at the facility.
- Ability to follow safety, environmental, documentation, and company requirements.
Work Environment
This position is primarily based in the scale house at an active construction and demolition recycling and scrap-metal facility. Employees should be comfortable working around commercial trucks, dump trucks, roll-off containers, heavy equipment, scrap vehicles, construction debris, and other industrial activity.
The Scale Attendant must remain alert to vehicle traffic and follow all facility safety procedures.
Schedule
Monday–Friday: Facility hours are 7:30 AM–4:30 PM
Employees must be onsite, prepared, and ready to begin work when the facility opens. Reliable and consistent attendance is extremely important for this position.
Pay: $15.00 - $18.00 per hour
Expected hours: 45.0 per week
Work Location: In person
