What they need

Position Summary:

The School Bus Driver provides safe, reliable transportation for students, coaches, and staff to athletic competitions and school-sponsored events. This role exists so students can participate fully in the life of the school beyond the classroom. You operate a school bus in accordance with Federal, Kansas, and school requirements and coordinate with Transportation department so coverage of the activity calendar is timely and professional.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Operate a school bus to transport students, coaches, and staff to and from athletic competitions, field trips, and other school-sponsored events.
  • Complete pre-trip and post-trip inspections and promptly report mechanical, safety, or equipment concerns.
  • Maintain student safety and orderly conduct while loading, in transit, and unloading, and follow school expectations for student supervision on trips.
  • Follow assigned itineraries, pickup and drop-off locations, and timing; communicate delays or route changes to the Transportation department contact.
  • Comply with all applicable Federal and Kansas CDL, school-bus, traffic, and student-transportation requirements, including Passenger (P) and School Bus (S)

endorsement rules.

  • Fuel, clean, and secure the assigned vehicle after each trip as directed.
  • Participate in safety meetings and remain available for drug and alcohol testing and background-check processes.
  • Coordinate with Facilities and with Athletics or the student-event sponsor on trip timing, vehicle assignment, and any student support needs.
  • Remain with the assigned trip, including wait time at venues, when return transportation is part of the duty.

Minimum Qualifications:
Must be 21 years of age or older. Valid Kansas driver’s license. Valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S)
endorsements. Wichita Collegiate School does not provide CDL training or certification; candidates must already hold the required license and endorsements. Must pass a pre-employment drug screening and background check and remain subject to required ongoing testing. High school diploma or equivalent. Demonstrated safe driving record.

Ideal candidates demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Knowledge of safe passenger and school-bus operations and of applicable Kansas and federal CDL rules.
  • Calm, professional student supervision and clear communication with coaches, sponsors, families, and school staff.
  • Defensive driving, strong situational awareness, and sound judgment in changing weather and traffic conditions.
  • Reliability for evening, weekend, and variable event-based assignments.
  • Ability to complete vehicle inspections and recognize issues that should be reported before a trip proceeds.
  • Prior school-bus, motor-coach, or comparable passenger-vehicle experience is preferred.

Work Environment: This is a part-time, event-based driving role. Hours follow the athletic and
student-event calendar rather than a standard office day and regularly include evenings,
weekends, and occasional daytime or school-break trips. The primary reporting location is the
Wichita Collegiate School campus; driving occurs on public roads in varying weather. Physical
demands include climbing bus steps, sitting for extended periods, and assisting with safe
student loading and unloading.

  • Summer work may be required for camps, summer programs, or other school-sponsored trips.
  • Evening and weekend work is required for athletic competitions and student events.
  • Trip assignments may include wait time at venues when return transportation is part of the duty.
  • Trip coordination is with Facilities and the Athletics or student-event sponsor for each assignment.
