School Caretaker

About the role

This diverse and hands-on position offers the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the school community with your general repair skills. The role includes the maintenance of facilities, grounds, vehicles and equipment. The successful candidate will help ensure the school remains safe, welcoming, and well maintained for students, staff and visitors.

Key responsibilities

• School buildings and facilities are inspected regularly, and any deficiencies reported to the line manager
• Perform minor maintenance tasks that do not require registered or qualified tradesperson
• Caretaking and grounds tools and equipment maintained in good condition
• Carry out maintenance repairs to items such as window catches, door locks
• Attend to staff requests in order of priority as discussed and agreed to with the line manager
• Assist with the creation of equipment/facilities as discussed with the line manager
• Ensure planned maintenance checks of playground equipment are carried out and report any defects to the line manager
• All firefighting equipment is checked regularly, service manual kept up to date and servicing arranged as required
• Identify security and safety hazards and report to the line manager
• Line manager informed of any damage/defective equipment, vandalism to buildings or grounds and necessary repairs to the same

About you

• Hands on experience in general maintenance, facilities management, caretaking, or a similar role
• Practical skills in general repairs and maintenance, handyman work or facilities upkeep
• A sound understanding of health and safety requirements
• Strong initiative with the ability to spot tasks that need doing and manage daily priorities without direct oversight
• Good communication and relationship-building skills
• Computer literacy
• A high level of patience, tolerance and a work positive attitude toward children
• Full New Zealand Driver Licence
• Physical fitness and willingness to undertake hands-on outdoor work
• Ability to pass a Police Vetting check
